1 killed, 2 injured in bandits attack in Kogi – Police

The Police Command in Kogi on Friday said one person was killed while two were injured in an attack by bandits on traders in Bagana village, Omala Local Government Area, Kogi.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the villagers claimed that four traders were killed during the attack said to have taken place about 8. 30 p.m. on Thursday.

Confirming the incident, SP William Ovye-Aya, told NAN that, “From the report that reached our Command only one person, and not four, that was killed in the unfortunate attack by bandits.

“The person killed was the rider of the tricycle and the two injured are the traders who were rushed to a medical facility in Abejukolo, headquarters of Omala LGC after a reconnaissance mission by our officers and men.

“On receipt of the report, the Commissioner of police (CP), Edward Egbuka, quickly mobilised and deployed a tactical squad and officers of the Division to the scene to possibly fish out the perpetrators.”

Ovye-Aya said the victims, all residents of Abejukolo Community, had gone to Bagana market to trade on that faithful day, but that as they left the market the suspected bandits attacked them around 8.30 p.m.

He said the victims were travelling in a Tricycle, popular known as “Keke Napep” when the gunmen opened fire on them, thereby killing the rider and injuring the two traders.

The traditional ruler of Omala LGA Traditional council, His Royal Highness Boniface Musa, the Ojogba of Ife, condemned the attack and prayed to God to give the family of the victim the fortitude to bear the loss.

He decried the incessant attacks on Bagana people by unknown gunmen, who denied the community the desired peace and progress.

He called on both the federal and state governments to come to the aid of the community.

Ebonyi man hacks mother to death for reporting him to village youths

A 32-year-old man, Arinze Chukwu, has been arrested by the police for hacking his mother to death with an axe in Ndieze community, Okpoto Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

The suspect was said to have killed his 60-year-old mother after she reported him to the village youths to be reprimanded for his bad behaviours.

According to The Nation, the youths beat up the suspect and tied him up at the village square.
Upon his release by the youths, the suspect was said to have attacked his mother with an axe out of anger on September 17, 2022.

The aged father of the suspect, Anthony Chukwu, confirmed that his son killed his wife because she reported his misdeeds to the village youths.

Acting on the complaint of the deceased, Anthony said that the village youths caught Arinze, tied up his hands and feet, beat him up and then left him in the sun for hours at the village square.

“That boy (Arinze) is my eighth child from my wife whom he just killed. I was not at home at the time it happened but I know he killed my wife because she reported him to our village youth association. She did not hate him.

She made a report to the association to stop his bad behaviour. At the village square, the youths punished him by tying his hands and feet and then beat him up. They later left him in the sun for hours to correct him.” the father narrated.

“When he was being dragged to the village square, he threatened to kill me and my wife for reporting him. Luckily for me, I was not at home when they released him. But he met my wife and killed her with an axe and fled. I never knew he was serious about the threat until I came back and saw my wife in a pool of blood.”

The police on receipt of the complaint, promptly arrested Arinze. He was charged to court for murder last week.

The court turned down the plea of the defendant. The trial Magistrate, Blessing Ibeabuchi-Chukwu, ordered that Arinze be remanded at the Abakaliki Correctional Centre.

The case was adjourned till October 10, 2022.

10 teachers killed, 50 others kidnapped in Kaduna – ASUSS

The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), Kaduna State chapter, has disclosed that bandits have killed about 10 teachers and abducted about 50 others in the State.

Ishaya Dauda, the Chairman, ASUSS Kaduna State chapter, who made the revelation, advised Governor Nasir El-Rufai to employ every means that is possible to ensure the release of all teachers and other victims still in captivity in different camps in the State.

Briefing newsmen in Kaduna on Wednesday, as part of activities to commemorate the 2022 World Teachers’ Day with the theme, “The Transformation of Education Begins with Teachers”, he lamented that “more than 10 secondary school teachers were killed and over 50 others abducted from January till date in Kaduna and the abducted teachers are still in captivity.”

According to him, the union is fully aware of the insecurity that is threatening the corporate existence of Kaduna State citizens, especially in the schools, urging the State government to take proactive actions towards bringing the menace to an end.

The union stated that it is equally aware of efforts being made by the State government towards the recruitment of Kaduna State vigilante service to secure the schools against the incessant attacks by terrorists.
