Maybe you and your friends decided to go for an evening outing and you’re the only one complaining of being bitten by mosquitoes while others are enjoying themselves. You might be forced to ask, why do mosquitoes bite me so much?

Some people might tell you it’s because your “blood is sweet”, but this is not entirely true. Scientists have discovered several factors that may be responsible for this occurrence. I’ll like to enlighten you about these factors in this article written according to MedicineNet.

1. Body odour– Mosquitoes are triggered by smell, they can sense certain compounds in your skin and sweat from the odour that is produced. Many people’s skin secretes more compounds like lactic acid, ammonia or cholesterol which are attractive to mosquitoes

2. Heat– Some people naturally have slightly higher temperatures than others. These types of persons are loved by mosquitoes. Wearing a cloth that traps heat around you like dark coloured clothes makes you target too.

3. Body size– Research has revealed that mosquitoes target larger persons generally. This could be because they have more blood and generate more heat

4. People who consume alcohol– Even though the reason is still unknown, people who drink alcohol, especially beer are more targeted by mosquitoes

5. Blood type– When people say your blood is sweet, they may be trying to tell you that you have the blood type that attracts mosquitoes. People with blood type O are more bitten by mosquitoes than other blood types.

6. Pregnant people tend to have high blood volume and excrete more heat hence they are more susceptible to mosquito bites.
