Police in Delta arrests fake EFCC operatives

The Delta State police Command have arrested five men allegedly impersonating Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) to defraud members of the public.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Edafe Bright in a press statement, “the police reacted following a series of complaints received from members of the public, especially from youths, alleging that EFCC operatives usually break into their houses at night, forcefully arrest them, take them away and extort a huge sum of money from them.

“The police immediately swung into action and intelligence gathered revealed that they may not be EFCC operatives as it was alleged.

“On 16th November 2022, the Command received another complaint from a victim (name withheld) whose house was stormed at night by the syndicate, they gained entrance into the compound by scaling the fence, broke into his apartment, forcefully abducted and took him away in a white Toyota Hiace bus”.

The victim further stated that on getting to Head Bridge (i.e. the boundary between Delta and Anambra State), they forcefully collected his phones from him, other valuables worth three million, seven hundred thousand naira (N3,700,000), forced him to make a cash transfer of two million, five hundred thousand naira (N2,500,000) and told him that they will come for him again. Five other victims also reported to the Command and made statements of how they were robbed of about fifteen million naira (N15,000,000).

According to the police, it became clear that it was the activities of hoodlums pretending to be EFCC Operatives.

Consequently, Delya State Commissioner of Police, Ari Muhammed Ali directed the Command Decoy Squad to investigate and ensure that the culprits are caught.

Subsequently, on 23 November 2022, the Commander, CP-Decoy, ASP Julius Robinson, acting on credible information led operatives on a sting operation and trailed the suspects to their hideout in a hotel (name withheld) located in Asaba where they hibernated to plan their next operation.

Five suspects arrested include Prince Allison, 29, the leader of the gang who claimed to be EFCC contract staff in Portharcourt, George Chisom Onyeweagu, 29, an Owerri resident who operated the POS used to forcefully withdraw money from victim’s account, Duke Okoro, 40, resident in Asaba, Delta State, Joseph Osinachi, 23, a resident of Lagos State and Onyocha Stanley, 32, who lived in Owerri.

The suspects admitted to having robbed different victims from various parts of the State. They also stated that they lodged some of their victims in a hotel for days until they succeeded in extorting huge sums of money from them, mostly via transfer of money from them into their mobile POS.

A white Hummer bus, two locally manufactured EFCC jackets, a POS machine and eight mobile phones were recovered from them. Six of their victims have identified them as the syndicate that broke into their houses under the guise of being EFCC operatives.

According to the PPRO, investigation is still ongoing and the suspects would be charged to court soon.

Gunmen abduct Imam, injure 11 in Ughelli

No fewer than 11 persons were injured by unknown gunmen who reportedly stormed the Ughelli mosque in an ash coloured Toyota Sienna.

The gunmen kidnapped the Imam of the Ughelli Central Mosque after they attacked worshippers shortly after prayers on Friday morning.

The gunmen, said to be a gang of five, stormed the mosque located at Otovwievwiere Street in Okorodafe axis of the town around 6 am, shooting sporadically.

The Imam, Mallam Muhammadu Sani, was taken away to an unknown destination.

One of the injured victims who spoke from his hospital bed, Muhammed Bagudu, 63, said that the gunmen with their faces masked entered the mosque and began to shoot at people.

“They shot me, my brother, one of the Imams and went away with another Imam, Muhammadu Sani from Katsina state,” Bagudu said.

Narrating the incident, the secretary of Arewa Community, Ughelli North, Darlington Ahmed Garma, said the suspects parked their vehicle “opposite the mosque. Two men entered the Mosque, and as they were taking the Imam away, they told the remaining members that were performing their morning prayers to go outside.

“Before they got outside the mosque, eleven worshippers were shot and they are currently on admission.”

Condemning the attack, foremost Muslim leader in the State, Alhaji Mumaika Unagha, said that Muslim worshippers, particularly those in Ughelli area are now in fear, as xthey do not know the motive for the attack”.

He called on the Commissioner of Police, Ari Mohammed Ali, to urgently fish out the culprits, he recalled that about two years ago, the Secretary of the Delta State Muslim Council, Mallam Musa Ugasa, who was a resident of Ughelli, was attacked and killed in yet to be unraveled circumstances.

Efforts to speak with the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Edafe Bright, were unsuccessful.

Lady Who Supplies Bandits’ Arms, Others nabbed

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, Zamfara State Command, have arrested a female gunrunner who allegedly specialises in supplying arms and ammunition to a notorious bandit kingpin identified as Dawa.

Naijablitznews reports the Zamfara State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Mohammed Shehu, in a statement said that the female gunrunner identified as Gaje Abdullah from Madachi village in Katsina State was arrested on November 29 by Police Tactical Operatives who acted on intelligence information.

“On 29th November, 2022 Police Tactical Operatives acted on intelligence information and arrested the above mentioned female suspect.

“The female suspect is a notorious gunrunner that specialises in transporting arms and ammunition to a notorious bandit kingpin Known as Dawa.

“The said bandits kingpin has been a notorious bandit leader terrorizing the innocent people of Zamfara and neighbouring states. The suspect confessed to her involvement in the crime. Investigation is in progress,” the police spokesperson said.

Similarly, SP Shehu said the police also arrested six persons suspected to be involved in criminal conspiracy and intimidation to wit extortion, adding that upon their arrest, police recovered from them the sum of N700,000 as part of levies they collected from the villages.

The PPRO explained that Police Tactical operatives on November 29 at about 4:15p.m arrested the six suspects who pretended as bandits to place levies on their host communities.

The suspects “collected millions of Naira through a bank account they created for this purpose.

“In the course of investigation, all the suspects confessed to the crime and further stated that part of their criminal activities was to send threatening messages to the villages asking to contribute and pay money to them or face attack.

“They further confessed to receiving millions of Naira from five different communities. Discreet investigation led to the recovery of the sum of Seven hundred thousand Naira as part of levies they collected from the affected villages. Effort is being made to make further arrest and recovery before being charged to court for prosecution.”

The suspects include Jamilu Mohammed ‘M’ of Gadar Manya village; Zayyanu Barmo ‘M’ of Manya Babba village; Abubakar Usman ‘M’ of Mandau Village; Lauwali Girkau ‘M’ of Girkau village; Sala Girkau ‘M’ of Girkau village and Abubakar Yahaya ‘M’ of Tungar Mani Village, all in Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

SP Shehu further stated that the Police Tactical Operatives in collaboration with vigilante acted on intelligence information regarding the abduction of 15 victims by terrorists at Dike village in Funtua Local Government Area of Katsina State.

According to the police spokesperson, “The Police operatives on receiving the intelligence information mobilized to the location and conducted search and rescue operation at sabon garin Dustin Kaura forest in Danjibga district of Tsafe LGa. The rescue operation was successfully conducted, leading to the rescue of the victims Hale and Hearty.

“The victims were taken to the hospital for medical check, debriefed by the Police detectives and handed over to their families.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Kolo Yusuf, while commending the police operatives and vigilant for the successful rescue operation, congratulates the victims for regaining their freedom, and reiterates the Command’s continuous determination to rid the state of criminal activities and apprehend criminal elements committing heinous crimes across the state.”

The kidnappers drove in immediately their victim parked upon reaching his destination. They flashed their guns before gaining access to their victim’s car and driving off with him.
