Though the actual cause of the explosion was not known, it was gathered that there was a disagreement between youths of Rumuji community that owned the Igboukwu field where APC scheduled its rally.

The youths were said to have stopped the party from holding the rally at the field as they barricaded and shut the entrance of the facility.

A source, who spoke in confidence said: “There was an explosion suspected to be dynamite. The explosion came with a loud bang and some persons were injured. The party officials had an altercation with the youths of the community over access to the venue of the rally before the explosion occurred”.

The Rivers Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, however, said the police were not aware of the explosion explaining that it was a fight between the APC and the community folks.

She said: “The command is not aware of any explosion. It was a fight between the community people. The APC I think applied for a community hall and the CDC chairman has a faction where some persons benefited while others didn’t benefit.

“They were asking the APC people to pay part of the money so that they could use the hall. The altercation within the community led to the fight and two persons were injured. We don’t know if there were other political parties involved in the fight. The CP has mandated the state CID to investigate it”.

Dr. Tunis acknowledged that the event amplifies ECOFEPA’s deliberate resolve to consistently pursue the dreams of its founding Members and recommend for members of Parliament to track generational transfer of knowledge, skills and all it takes to tackle the challenges of the future ahead.

In her address, the 2nd Vice President of ECOFEPA, Madam Gabriella Fernandes, commended the ECOWAS Commission for its outstanding support in enhancing the activities of the association to achieve its goals for women’s integration and empowerment in politics.

Hon. Fernandes reiterated that the symposium will spark the beginning of efforts to launch their projects and synchronize activities in the areas of leadership and entrepreneurship, which have the propensity to boomerang and catapult women’s advancement into decision-making in the ECOWAS region.

Earlier, the Youth Representative for the West Africa Youth Assembly, Mamadu Djalo, said everyone is aware of the social pressure and barriers that women and youth face daily, in trying to climb up to the political power, and employed men in Africa who control the political powers, to ensure that such power is balanced.

According to Djalo, Women and youth are very isolated for too long, and that there is need for the men to work together with both youth and Women to fill the sense of belonging, as the deliberation cannot be realistic without the participation of the youth and women.
