SAD! Popular Award Winning Singer Dies Of Cancer
Grammy-winning R&B artist D’Angelo is dead.
He was 51.
In a statement, his family wrote that the star, whose real name was Michael Eugene Archer, left behind a “legacy of extraordinarily moving music” and asked fans to celebrate “the gift of song that he has left for the world”.
The influential singer was known for pioneering neo-soul, a genre blending R&B with other types of music, including hip-hop and jazz.
His three albums won four Grammy Awards. The music video for his hit song Untitled (How Does It Feel) became notorious for its smoldering, single-shot performance, where D’Angelo appeared to be performing naked.
“The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life,” his family said in a statement obtained by CBS News, the BBC’s US media partner.
Fellow musicians Beyoncé, Nile Rogers, and Lauryn Hill have paid their respects.
D’Angelo began his career as a songwriter and worked alongside big names in music like Lauryn Hill and The Roots.
He rose to fame in the 1990s with his debut album Brown Sugar.
His song, Lady, from that album reached the number 10 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in 1996.
That song earned him multiple Grammy nominations and secured his spot on the music scene.
The son of a Pentecostal minister, D’Angelo was born in Richmond, Virginia, and taught himself to play piano when he was just three years old.
Throughout his adolescence, he performed locally in groups including Three of a Kind, Michael Archer and Precise, and Intelligent, Deadly but Unique (I.D.U.).
When he was 18, he won the amateur talent competition at Harlem’s Apollo Theater for three consecutive weeks and was quickly signed to a publishing deal with EMI.
He established himself as a commercial force with his 1995 debut album, also called Brown Sugar, and won two Grammys for the 2000 follow-up, Voodoo.
However, he subsequently struggled with alcoholism and nearly died in a car crash in 2005.
He returned to music in 2014 with Black Messiah – an album in the works for years – which he finished after watching the national unrest prompted by protests over the failure to convict police officers in the deaths of the unarmed black men Michael Brown and Eric Garner.
It went on to win the Grammy for best R&B album in February 2016.
Among those paying tribute was hip-hop legend DJ Premier, who produced D’Angelo’s song Devil’s Pie.
“Such a sad loss,” he wrote on social media. “We have so many great times. Gonna miss you so much. Sleep Peacefully D’ Love You KING.”
The Voodoo album, which was released in 2000, topped the US charts, and in its most recent list of the greatest albums of all time, Rolling Stone magazine placed it at 28, one place above The Beatles’ White Album.
D’Angelo had been working in the studio on what would have been his fourth album with Raphael Saadiq.

Following the latest eviction, 10 housemates remain in the ‘Show Ya Sef’ house as the competition moves towards its final stages.
Actress Nkechi Blessing and former Big Brother Naija reality show winner, Phyna are set to settle their ongoing fight in a celebrity boxing match.
The highly-anticipated face-off is scheduled for October 1, 2026 at the Federal Palace Hotel in Lagos State.
The organisers, Balmoral, announced the match in an Instagram post on Friday evening.
Sharing the poster, the organiser wrote, “Plot twist? Let’s see what the women can do. Phyna VS Nkechi.
“The rivalry is real. Now, let’s see who backs it up when the bell rings.”
This came a few hours after Nkechi Blessing and Phyna engaged in a heated exchange on social media.
Grammy-nominated music producer Tay Keith died from the toxic effects of multiple substances, with his death officially classified as an accidental overdose, according to an autopsy report released nearly three months after his death.
The Nashville Office of the Medical Examiner determined that the producer, whose real name was Brytavious Lakeith Chambers, died on June 18, 2026, in Nashville, Tennessee.
According to ABC News, the 29-year-old producer had mitragynine, 7-hydroxy mitragynine, mitragynine pseudoindoxyl and ketamine in his system. The medical examiner listed toxicity from the substances as the cause of death and ruled the manner of death accidental.
Keith was found dead inside his Nashville apartment after Metro Nashville Police officers conducted a welfare check.
At the time, police said there were no indications of foul play and that the cause of death would be determined following an autopsy.
Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Keith rose to prominence in the American hip-hop industry through collaborations with some of the biggest names in music, including Drake, Travis Scott, Beyoncé and Cardi B.
He produced Drake’s 2018 hit “Look Alive” and earned his first Grammy nomination for Best Rap Song for his work on Travis Scott’s “Sicko Mode” at the 2019 Grammy Awards.
Keith received another Grammy nomination in 2024 in the Best Rap Song category for producing “Rich Flex,” performed by Drake and 21 Savage.
His death prompted tributes from several major artists with whom he had worked.
Drake paid tribute to Keith in an Instagram post, expressing appreciation for the producer’s contribution to his music career and mourning his death.
Travis Scott also honoured Keith, saying his absence would be felt and vowing to continue pushing forward while carrying his memory.
Beyond music, Keith maintained strong ties to Middle Tennessee State University, where he earned his degree. Despite achieving significant success in the music industry, he remained committed to completing his education.
Beverly Keel, dean of the university’s Scott Borchetta College of Media and Entertainment, said Keith had promised his mother that he would graduate from college.
Keel said the producer later returned to the institution as an honorary professor and continued supporting students after completing his studies.
Keith’s family described him as a producer, songwriter, entrepreneur and philanthropist whose influence extended beyond the music industry.
In a statement issued through his record label, Drumatized, the family said his legacy would live on through the music he created, the opportunities he helped create for others and the people he inspired.
The newly released autopsy findings formally establish the cause and manner of Keith’s death. Police had previously ruled out suspected foul play while awaiting the medical examiner’s findings.
