…Boniface, Uzoho, Iheanacho Return
Victor Boniface, Ola Aina, Francis Uzoho, and Kelechi Iheanacho were among notable returnees as Super Eagles Head Coach, Eric Chelle, unveiled Nigeria’s provisional squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Aina was injured in Nigeria’s draw against South Africa in September during the World Cup qualifiers and is expected to be out for three months.
Boniface, Uzoho, and Iheanacho have not been part of the team in recent matches.
The 54-man AFCON list was released on the Super Eagles’ social media handles on Tuesday evening, just about three weeks before the competition in Morocco.
As expected, the list included regulars like Captain William Troost-Ekong, Wilfred Ndidi, Stanley Nwabali, Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Simon Moses, Samuel Chukwueze, and Zaidu Sanusi, among others.
A breakdown of the squad shows that they are six goalkeepers, 13 defenders, 12 midfielders, and 23 forwards.
Ebenezer Akinsanmiro of Inter Milan, but on loan at Pisa, made the provisional squad and is expected to make the final list for the competition.
There are also four players from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) on the roster: they are Adekunle Adeleke, Ebenezer Harcourt, Abdulrasheed Shehu, Ekeson Okorie, and Chisom Orji.
Nigeria’s final 28-man list will be unveiled on or before December 11. The 2025 AFCON will run from December 21st, 2025, to January 18, 2026.
The Super Eagles will play Tanzania, Uganda, and Tunisia in Group C and will begin camp in Egypt on December 10 for the competition.

Just in: Unlucky Sunday for Nigeria as Super Falcons, Flying Eagles crumble, World Cup hopes dimmed
It is an unlucky Sunday for two National teams of Nigeria, the Super Falcons fell to Cameroon just as Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have been knocked out of the race for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup after suffering a heavy 4-1 defeat to Burkina Faso in the final of the 2026 WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship.
The defeat at the Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, also ended Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.
The WAFU Zone B final carried added importance, as the winner was guaranteed a place at the 2027 U-20 AFCON, which will serve as the qualifying tournament for the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
With Burkina Faso emerging victorious, the Young Stallions secured the region’s ticket, while Nigeria’s hopes of returning to the global youth tournament came to an end.
Burkina Faso took control of the final from the opening whistle, scoring three goals within the first 15 minutes and leaving the Flying Eagles with a huge deficit.
Nigeria struggled to contain the Young Stallings’ attacking pressure and could not recover from the early setback before the break.
Coach Abdu Maikaba’s side attempted to fight back after the interval but failed to produce the response required to turn the game around.
Burkina Faso eventually added another goal to complete a convincing 4-1 victory, while Nigeria’s consolation effort was not enough to change the outcome.
The result was particularly painful for the Flying Eagles after Burkina Faso had already defeated them 2-0 during the group stage.
Nigeria had hoped to avenge that earlier loss in the final but instead suffered another defeat to the Young Stallions when the stakes were highest.
The Flying Eagles had reached the final after overcoming Côte d’Ivoire in a dramatic semi-final.
