The family of former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, has expressed shock over the road accident involving the boxer, which claimed the lives of two his friends.
A family source, who confirmed the incident, said the news came as a rude shock to them.
Speaking to the BBC on condition of anonymity, the relative said the family was hopeful that Joshua would recover quickly from the injuries he sustained in the crash.
“The news of the accident came to the family as a shock. We are praying and hoping for his speedy recovery. For those who lost their lives, we pray that their souls rest in peace,” the source said.
The family member further disclosed that Joshua was expected in Nigeria for the New Year celebrations, adding that his absence had earlier raised concern among relatives.
“He normally comes home for the New Year. We had not seen him yet, so we were expecting him,” the source added.
Meanwhile, American boxer and social media personality, Jake Paul, has also reacted to the incident, expressing sympathy and offering prayers for Joshua and others affected by the accident.
Paul, who recently faced Joshua in a highly publicised bout that ended in a sixth round knockout, said the incident was a reminder that life is more important than sports.
Reacting via his X account, Paul wrote: “Life is much more important than boxing. I am praying for the lost lives, AJ and everyone affected by today’s unfortunate accident.”
The accident has continued to draw reactions from the global sports community, with fans and athletes sending prayers and goodwill messages to Joshua and the families of the deceased.
