Nigerian singer, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has been released from detention, bringing relief to fans and supporters after days of uncertainty surrounding his situation.
The news of his release was confirmed on social media by Portable’s manager, Baby Love, on Monday, January 19.
Taking to her official Instagram page, she shared a photo of herself with Portable, signalling the end of his detention and hinting at the behind-the-scenes efforts that led to his freedom.
As of the time of this report, neither Portable nor his legal representatives have issued a formal statement regarding the circumstances of his detention or any conditions attached to his release.
Recall that the Ogun State Police Command launched an investigation into a viral video showing Nigerian musician Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, allegedly being assaulted while in police custody.
The video, which has been circulating widely on social media, particularly X, shows the Zazu crooner in handcuffs, shirtless, and tearfully pleading while seated on a couch in what appears to be a police holding area.
Reports suggest he was being beaten by some police personnel at a detention facility in Ogun State, sparking public outrage and renewed concerns over police conduct and human rights practices.
Reacting to the video, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed to Vanguard that Portable remains in custody but condemned the alleged assault.
“Let me give you a heads up before my official statement comes out,.
“Yes, he was arrested, and he is with us, but that is a different issue. What is important is the assault that was happening at the station. We don’t condone it,”DSP Babaseyi said
He stressed that the filming or public display of suspects is not permitted, noting that such actions endanger both the safety of suspects and the integrity of investigations.
“We don’t condone videoing suspects. We don’t even put suspects’ faces out. No matter who the suspect is, nobody should be treated in such a manner,” he said.
DSP Babaseyi added that the command has commenced an internal investigation and assured that any officer found culpable would face the law.
“The investigation is ongoing, and the officers involved, if found culpable, will be sent to the appropriate authorities. That process has already started,” he said.
Portable’s arrest follows allegations of assault against actress and skit maker Omobolarinde Akinyanju, better known as Ashabi Simple, who is one of the musician’s baby mamas and the mother of one of his children.
The incident reportedly occurred on January 1, 2026, at Portable’s bar in Ogun State, where Ashabi visited following an invitation from the singer.
According to reports, a heated argument ensued over Ashabi’s status in Portable’s life—she insisted on being recognized as a wife rather than a baby mama, while Portable maintained that only his legally married wife, Bewaji, holds that title.
The disagreement escalated into physical violence, with Ashabi accusing Portable of slapping her, beating her, seizing phones, and threatening her and her siblings with an axe.
Portable responded to the allegations in a lengthy Instagram video, expressing anger over a lawsuit filed by Ashabi and accusing her of infidelity.
While appearing in court, the presiding judge denied Portable bail, citing the absence of the allegedly assaulted police officer in court.
The judge insisted on seeing the officer before ruling on the bail application. Consequently, Portable was remanded in custody until a fresh bail consideration on January 19.

Davido Gives Reasons Why He Honoured Abducted Oyo Sch Victims at FIFA World Cup
Davido has explained the reason behind his emotional tribute during his performance at the FIFA World Cup, saying he could not remain silent while children and teachers are still missing in Nigeria.
Speaking on the gesture, the Afrobeats star said many people avoid discussing the country’s security challenges because they want to protect Nigeria’s image, but insisted that there is no image to protect when innocent children are being abducted.
> “A lot of people don’t really want to talk about what is going on in our country. Simply because they want to protect the image. But there’s no image to protect if little kids are being kidnapped,” Davido said.
The singer noted that although he was honoured to perform at the World Cup, he believed it was important to use the global stage to draw attention to the plight of the abducted pupils and teachers from Oyo State.
According to him, everyone has a unique way of making an impact, and his platform is music and live performances.
> “My power is in music and performances. These students and teachers have been missing and still haven’t been found. So yeah, I used my platform to project what’s really going on,” he added.

Toke Makinwa advocates dating within one’s income level
Nollywood actress and media personality Toke Makinwa has shared her views on the role of financial compatibility in relationships and marriage.
Speaking on a recent episode of the MENtality podcast hosted by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Makinwa said she believes people should date within their income bracket, arguing that significant financial differences can create challenges in relationships.
She also claimed that many men pursue relationships with women whose lifestyles exceed their financial capacity, only to later complain that women are materialistic.
She said, “I am a big believer of date within your age and within your class. That way there will not be stories that touch.
“You will have a good girl at home, a girl who will even make dinner with her own money when you don’t have. Yet, some men will still want to cheat on her with a woman they can’t afford.
“Heaven forbid you end up with a guy who hasn’t blown. The day he blows that is when you will know his true personality.
“And that scares women. Money doesn’t change people, it just reveal who the person is. So many men are treating women who sacrificed everything for them badly.”
