The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has urged the National Assembly to reconsider and approve a proposed amendment to the Electoral Amendment Bill that would mandate the electronic transmission of election results from polling units.
The call followed the adoption of a report by NBA President Afam Osigwe, SAN, at the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Maiduguri, Borno State, on 5 February 2026.
The report expressed concern over the Senate’s recent rejection of an amendment to Clause 60, Subsection 3, which would have required presiding officers of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to transmit results in real time to the INEC Result Viewing (IREV) portal immediately after Form EC8A was duly signed, stamped, and countersigned by party agents.
The NEC noted that the current discretionary language in the Electoral Act—allowing presiding officers to ‘transfer the results … in a manner as prescribed by the Commission’—weakens the legal foundation for transparent, real-time reporting.
According to the council, the ambiguity leaves room for manipulation, misinterpretation, and post-election disputes.
In adopting Osigwe’s report, the NEC resolved that the National Assembly should urgently pass the proposed amendment to Clause 60(3) to clearly compel electronic transmission of results.
It emphasised that explicit statutory requirements, rather than discretionary wording, are essential to safeguard electoral transparency, protect the integrity of votes, and restore public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.
The NEC further highlighted that credible elections are central to a functioning democracy. Continued resistance to enforceable electronic transmission measures, the council said, undermines democratic accountability.
‘Technology-backed transparency is no longer optional in a modern democracy’, the NEC stressed, calling on Nigeria to align its electoral framework with global best practices.
The council concluded by urging lawmakers to demonstrate legislative responsibility and statesmanship by supporting the amendment.
The NBA reaffirmed its commitment to ongoing engagement and advocacy to ensure that Nigeria’s electoral laws clearly reflect the will of the people as expressed at the ballot.
The Oyo State Police Command has nabbed 10 suspected members of a human parts trafficking syndicate and recovered suspected human remains, including a heart and pieces of a skull, during an intelligence-led operation in the state.
The suspects were arrested at their various hideouts in Iseyin and Saki areas of Oyo State following months of intelligence gathering, discreet surveillance and monitoring by operatives of the Command’s Monitoring Unit.
The suspects were identified as Adam Ibrahim, 42; Nasiru Kabiru, 22; Tijani Wasiu, 54; Abiola Nasiru, 45; Amusa Gbadamosi, 57; Raheem Taofeek, 46; Jimoh Muritala, 35; Suleiman Busari, 47; Ganiyu Nurudeen, 36; and Usman Abdullahi, 52.
According to the police, searches conducted at the suspects’ hideouts led to the recovery of several suspected human parts, including one suspected human heart, human flesh, pieces of human skull and assorted charms.
The Command said the recovered items had been secured as exhibits and would undergo forensic examination as investigations continue.
The suspects reportedly confessed during interrogation to varying degrees of involvement in the alleged trade in human parts for ritual purposes. The police said they were also assisting investigators in tracing the source of the recovered items, as well as establishing how they were procured and their intended use.
The Command added that efforts were ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the alleged syndicate.
The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, commended the operatives for the successful intelligence-led operation and their painstaking efforts in tracking down the suspects.poli
He assured residents that the Command would continue to intensify its efforts to combat criminal activities and protect lives and property across the state.
Ahead of today’s guber poll, the Police has deployed some of its security dogs to Osun state to ensure seurity is not breeched during and after the election.
The police dogs have been prepared to assist security personnel in detecting and confronting potential threats from violent criminals.
The Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Hon. Adewale Egbedun, has reportedly been placed under house arrest, with unidentified security operatives in police uniforms surrounding his residence in Osun State.
According to reports, the security personnel arrived at the Speaker’s residence in more than 10 black Hilux vehicles and allegedly cordoned off the premises.
The Imole Campaign Council said it attempted to contact senior police officers and the Police Situation Room to obtain clarification on the development but was unable to reach them.
It also urged security agencies and political actors to ensure that the electoral process remains peaceful and free from intimidation, fear or interference.
The council called on residents and all stakeholders to remain calm, obey the law and await an official explanation from the relevant authorities.
As of the time of filing this report, there had been no official explanation from the police or other security agencies regarding the reported operation at the Speaker’s residence.
