Ex-Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has remained in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for a third straight day as investigators continue to question him over allegations of massive corruption tied to his time in office.
The ex-governor, who led Kaduna State from 2015 to 2023, is being investigated for the alleged misappropriation of more than ₦433 billion during his eight-year administration. Sources familiar with the inquiry say the anti-graft agency had initially offered him administrative bail, requiring a Permanent Secretary and a Federal Ministry director to serve as sureties.
However, the arrangement reportedly stalled after the senior civil servant who appeared to finalise the process was met with hesitation from officials.
The individual later withdrew, allegedly citing threats, a development that has raised concerns about possible pressure surrounding the case.
The commission has yet to release an official statement addressing the situation.
El-Rufai is also expected to answer questions from the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission over separate allegations. It remains uncertain whether he will honour that invitation while still being held by the EFCC.
Sources indicate that his legal team has formally notified the anti-corruption body of his current detention, explaining why he may be unable to appear as scheduled.
