The Federal Government has successfully evacuated 1,230 stranded Nigerians from Niamey in the Republic of Niger, in what officials describe as a carefully coordinated humanitarian operation.
A statement by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, on Wednesday in Abuja, confirmed that the exercise reflects the government’s firm commitment to safeguarding the welfare and dignity of its citizens abroad. 
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to inform the general public of the successful evacuation and safe return of stranded Nigerian nationals from the Republic of Niger. This coordinated humanitarian exercise underscores the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to the protection, welfare, and dignity of its citizens abroad”, the statement read.
According to the Ministry, the returnees arrived in two batches, with 708 individuals landing on 23 March 2026, followed by another 522 on 29 March 2026.
“The evacuation operation, facilitated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with relevant national and international partners, led to the voluntary repatriation of a total of 1,230 Nigerians”, he added.
The Ministry highlighted the role of international partners, particularly the International Organization for Migration, in ensuring the operation ran smoothly.
Upon arrival in Kano, the evacuees were received by a broad coalition of government agencies and humanitarian organisations, ensuring a structured and efficient process.
“The Ministry worked closely with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), whose logistical and technical support proved invaluable in ensuring the smooth execution of the exercise.
“The presence and active participation of these agencies ensured a well-coordinated reception process, highlighting the importance of inter-agency collaboration in responding effectively to humanitarian situations”, it further stated.
After undergoing documentation procedures at the airport, the returnees were moved to a temporary facility where they received food, medical care and other essential support.
The Ministry confirmed that all evacuees have since been safely reunited with their families after completing the necessary formalities.
Officials stressed that the operation forms part of a wider effort to protect Nigerians overseas, while also acknowledging the cooperation of the Nigerien authorities.
“Following arrival procedures, the returnees underwent a profiling exercise at the airport to ensure proper documentation and to facilitate subsequent reintegration measures.
“The Ministry is pleased to report that, upon completion of the necessary processes, the evacuees were safely discharged and reunited with their respective families.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterates its appreciation to the Government of the Republic of Niger for the cooperation extended during the evacuation process”, the Spokesperson said.
The ministry therefore urged Nigerians living abroad to remain law-abiding and maintain contact with diplomatic missions for support when needed.
“Nigerian citizens residing abroad are advised to remain law-abiding, adhere strictly to the laws of their host countries, and maintain regular contact with Nigerian diplomatic missions for guidance and support”, it stated.
