Chelsea on Monday was disgraced by hard fighting Nottingham Forest defeated the Blues 1-3 at Stamford Bridge.
Fresh from killing off Chelsea’s top-five hopes, Nottingham Forest will now turn their attention to making sure the London club cannot sneak into the Champions League through the back door.
After being thrashed at home by Forest’s second string, Chelsea cannot finish in the top five and their only hope of getting into the Champions League is for Aston Villa to win the Europa League, finish fifth and free up a sixth place through the Premier League.
But, a goal up from the first leg of their Europa League semi-final tie with Villa, Forest will fancy completing the job against their Midlands rivals and qualifying for the Champions League by lifting the trophy in Istanbul later this month.
It is a remarkable potential scenario for a team who had seemed destined for the Championship for so long this season and underlines what a remarkable job head coach Vitor Pereira is doing. Forest are not yet mathematically safe, but they are all but assured of their Premier League status thanks to this result.
Chelsea have more chance of finishing sixth from bottom than sixth from top, having lost a sixth successive league game.
Pereira made eight changes, one more than Villa manager Unai Emery in their defeat by Tottenham, and watched Taiwo Awoniyi, twice, and Igor Jesus, from the penalty spot, score the goals that secured a stunning win at Stamford Bridge.
Awoniyi is not in Pereira’s Europa League squad. But the only real concern for Forest is that Morgan Gibbs-White, who was sent on as a half-time substitute, was forced off with a head injury after clashing with Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez.
Gibbs-White and Sánchez both left the field with bandages around their heads and had to be replaced. Chelsea’s teenager Jesse Derry had been carried off on a stretcher with a nasty head injury at the end of the first half.
Chelsea’s dreadful day was compounded by Cole Palmer missing from the penalty spot, in front of England manager Thomas Tuchel, after Derry had clashed heads with Zach Abbott, who also had to be replaced.

Klopp Set To Take Charge Of Germany After Nagelsmann’s Exit
Former Liverpool F.C. manager Jürgen Klopp is set to become the new head coach of the Germany national football team after indicating his willingness to take over following the departure of Julian Nagelsmann.
The German Football Association confirmed on Friday that it has begun the process of appointing a new coach after parting ways with Nagelsmann in the aftermath of Germany’s disappointing 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign. The federation said discussions with Klopp would commence after he signalled his readiness in principle to accept the role.
In a statement, the DFB said it would now seek talks with Klopp regarding the vacant position following Nagelsmann’s departure.
Nagelsmann stepped down after Germany’s shock elimination by Paraguay in the Round of 32, bringing an end to his tenure as national team coach. The decision followed discussions with DFB officials after the team’s early World Cup exit.
Klopp has been out of frontline coaching since leaving Liverpool at the end of the 2023/24 season after nearly nine years in charge, during which he guided the club to both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League titles.
The 59-year-old is currently serving as Red Bull’s Head of Global Football. However, reports indicate that he has a verbal agreement that would allow him to leave the role should he accept the opportunity to coach Germany.
