Tech Derby, a United Kingdom-based innovation and technology community, has hosted another session of its Pre-Seed Accelerator and Founder Readiness Programme aimed at helping start-up founders improve investment readiness and business growth strategies.
The programme, held at the University of Derby’s Game Changers Lab, brought together founders, investors, ecosystem leaders and business support organisations from across Derby and the East Midlands.
The session was themed “Clarity on Funding Readiness & the Funding Stack” and focused on helping entrepreneurs understand investor expectations, fundraising realities and sustainable growth strategies within the innovation ecosystem.
The Founder Readiness Programme was supported by the British Business Bank, Mercia Ventures, Derby City Council and LemFi.
Experts from across the ecosystem delivered key insights during the event, including Lewis Stringer of the British Business Bank, Amber Jardine of Mercia Ventures and Chris Pook of Derby City Council.
A growth-focused session was also delivered by Damilola Owolabi, Senior Manager, Growth at LemFi, under the topic “Clarity on Growth: Choosing a Repeatable Route.” The session explored practical strategies for business expansion, customer retention, scalable systems and product-led growth.
Founders participating in the programme represented sectors such as artificial intelligence, fintech, education technology, digital platforms, healthcare innovation and sustainability.
Speaking after the event, Tech Derby Co-founder Akindayo Akindolani said the programme was designed to expose founders to practical insights from investors, policymakers and business leaders.
“This session was designed to bring real ecosystem voices into the room so founders can better understand funding readiness from multiple perspectives; public sector support, venture investment, founder growth strategy, and the wider funding landscape,” he said.
He added that the initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen the innovation ecosystem in Derby and the East Midlands.
“What we are building through Tech Derby is bigger than a single programme. We are helping create a stronger startup and innovation ecosystem for Derby and the East Midlands; one that gives founders access, visibility, confidence, and meaningful support,” Akindolani stated.
During discussions at the event, one participant reportedly shared their experience using different remittance platforms before returning to LemFi due to its user experience and customer-focused features.
Organisers said the feedback reinforced a key lesson for start-ups — that long-term success depends not only on attracting users but also on building products customers trust and continue to use.
Tech Derby said the Founder Readiness Programme aligns with its wider mission of promoting entrepreneurship, innovation-led businesses and collaboration among founders, universities, investors and local communities.
The organisation noted that the initiative also supports preparations for the upcoming Tech Derby Summit during East Midlands Tech Week 2026, where discussions around artificial intelligence, start-ups, digital innovation and responsible technology adoption are expected to take centre stage.
Speaking on the programme’s significance, Tech Derby Co-Founder and Project Lead, Olatunji Olawale, stressed the importance of expanding access for early-stage founders.
“One of the most important things we are intentionally building through Tech Derby is access, access to knowledge, opportunities, investors, strategic partnerships, and meaningful conversations that many early-stage founders may not traditionally have access to,” he said.
He added that the programme aims to help founders become more structured, investment-ready and globally competitive.
Also speaking, Adepeju Bello, Tech Advisory and Policy Lead at Tech Derby, said successful start-ups require not only innovation but also resilience, strategic clarity and access to the right support systems.

FG plans digital registration of cattle to tackle rustling
The Federal Government has concluded plans to introduce a digital registration system for cattle and other livestock as part of measures to curb cattle rustling and improve livestock management across the country.
Under the proposed system, cattle and other four-legged livestock will be fitted with electronic ear tags containing unique identification details, geolocation information and proof of ownership.
The Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha, disclosed this on Tuesday after briefing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the activities of his ministry and the implementation of the National Ranching Policy at the State House, Abuja.
Maiha said the electronic identification system would form part of a national livestock database designed to enable authorities to identify, monitor and track animals across the country.
According to him, the technology would help establish ownership and make it easier to trace livestock that stray or are stolen.
He described the initiative as part of the Federal Government’s non-kinetic strategy for addressing insecurity in rural communities, particularly cattle rustling.
Beyond its security benefits, the minister said the digital registration system would contribute to the modernisation of Nigeria’s livestock sector by moving production away from traditional practices towards a more organised and technology-driven system.
Maiha explained that the electronic identification programme was being developed alongside the government’s plan to rehabilitate 417 grazing reserves and transform them into integrated livestock communities.
He said the ranching programme would commence with a pilot project in Plateau State before being extended to Benue, Nasarawa, Kaduna and Adamawa states, as well as the Federal Capital Territory.
The minister said the locations were prioritised because of their history of farmers-herders conflicts.
He explained that the ranching strategy was designed to reduce the movement of large herds by providing livestock owners with access to pasture, water, veterinary services and other essential infrastructure within designated settlements.
Maiha noted that the traditional system of livestock production had become increasingly difficult to sustain due to the disappearance of grazing routes as a result of agricultural expansion, urbanisation and infrastructure development.
“Large number of cattle on the move is crisis-prone because, number one, the grazing routes have disappeared. Farms, large farms have come up, aggressive urbanisation, demand for land for infrastructure development, so many other things have made nomadism not sustainable,” he said.
He said the proposed grazing reserves would be developed as economic communities rather than places where cattle would merely be confined.
According to him, the planned settlements would include residential facilities, primary schools, healthcare centres, veterinary clinics, solar power installations and earth dams for irrigation and pasture production.
The government also expects the concentration of livestock within the reserves to attract private investment into milk production, dairy processing, meat processing and other areas of the livestock value chain.
Maiha said the ministry was promoting improved livestock breeds and commercial pasture cultivation to boost productivity.
He explained that improved breeds would enable pastoralists to maintain smaller herds while producing higher quantities of milk and meat.
He added that pasture would either be cultivated within the livestock settlements or harvested from other locations and transported to ranches.
The minister said the government was also working to modernise other aspects of livestock production, including veterinary services, dairy production, abattoirs, fodder cultivation and vaccine storage.
He disclosed that seven model veterinary clinics had already been established, while the long-term objective was to establish at least one model veterinary hospital in every state.
Maiha further said the government was developing off-grid cold-chain facilities for animal vaccines to ensure that they were properly stored and transported under the required conditions.
He expressed confidence that the combination of digital livestock identification, ranching, improved breeds, better veterinary services and modern infrastructure would help reduce conflicts associated with cattle movement while strengthening Nigeria’s livestock economy.

INEC accommodates SDP in Osun guber poll ballot
The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC said it has began the reproduction of ballot papers for the Osun State Governorship Election to accommodate the candidate of the Social Democratic Party SDP, Dr Francis Olugbenga Ajala, and his running mate, Faseke Babajimi Oladipo, who have now been added to the ballot.
In a statement signed by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee at INEC, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the Commission said the action was taken in compliance with the judgment of the Federal High Court, Abuja, delivered on 22nd July 2026 in Suit No.
FHC/ABJ/CS/344/2026, in a matter between the Social Democratic Party and Dr Francis Olugbenga Ajala on one hand, and INEC on the other.
According to the statement, the court had ordered the Commission to forthwith recognise, accept, upload, process and publish the name and particulars of Dr Ajala as the candidate of the SDP for the election.
“The Commission wishes to inform the public that the reproduced ballot papers will arrive in Osun State on Thursday, 13th August 2026, and will, same day, be moved to Local Government Area offices across the State, in line with its standard distribution procedure ahead of the election,” the statement read.
With the addition of the SDP candidate, the total number of political parties contesting the governorship election, scheduled for Saturday, 15th August 2026, now stands at 15.
INEC noted that the result sheets for the election are also being reproduced alongside the ballot papers to reflect the inclusion of the SDP candidate.

Police stop Amotekun, vigilantes from Osun guber poll
The Nigeria Police Force has stopped the Western Nigeria Security Network, popularly known as Amotekun, vigilante groups and other non-state security outfits from participating in security operations for Saturday’s Osun State governorship election.
The Force warned political parties, candidates and their supporters against engaging, arming or deploying such groups for election-related activities.
The directive was communicated through a statement from the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, speaking on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
According to the police, these community and quasi-security formations will have no involvement whatsoever in election-related security functions. This includes activities such as escorting electoral materials to polling locations, providing security at polling units, setting up checkpoints, or carrying weapons in connection with the election.
The police also issued a broader warning to political parties, their candidates, supporters and the general public, cautioning against violence, intimidation tactics and thuggery in the lead-up to and during voting. The Force stated plainly that persistent election-related crimes, among them snatching ballot boxes, intimidating voters, buying votes and confrontations between opposing camps of supporters would not be permitted to occur unchecked, as individuals implicated in these offences, whether as the ones physically committing the acts or as those funding and organising them, will face arrest and prosecution regardless of their political connections or standing in society.
The Force named the agencies authorised to handle election security: the police itself, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Nigeria Correctional Service, and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). They are expected to cover all polling units, collation centres, election materials, officials, observers, journalists and voters alike in the 30 Local Government Areas in Osun State.
