Finally, Amaechi emerges Atiku’s running mate after closed door meeting with him

The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 general election, Atiku Abubakar, has reportedly settled on former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, as his preferred running mate following a closed-door meeting held in Abuja on Monday evening.

The development comes weeks after the ADC presidential primary election in April, where Atiku Abubakar emerged victorious, defeating Amaechi and former economic adviser Mohammed Hayatu-Deen to secure the party’s presidential ticket for the 2027 race.

Sources familiar with the meeting disclosed that the discussions focused largely on the party’s strategy ahead of the election and the ongoing consultations regarding the vice-presidential slot.

Since the conclusion of the primary election, attention within the party has shifted toward selecting a running mate capable of strengthening the ADC’s national appeal and broadening its support base across the country.

Although Atiku is said to have left the final decision on the vice-presidential nomination largely in the hands of the party leadership, insiders maintain that Amaechi remains one of the strongest contenders being considered for the position.

According to sources, the former Rivers governor used the meeting to present certain conditions and expectations, assuring the ADC presidential candidate that he would communicate his final position within the next 48 hours.

“Amaechi assured Atiku that he would revert within 48 hours concerning his demands,” a source familiar with the discussions said.
