The initiative, which is being coordinated by the Kano State Hisbah Board, is designed to support low-income residents who may be unable to afford the costs associated with marriage.

According to the board, a total of 3,000 couples have registered to participate in the state-sponsored programme, reflecting widespread interest in the initiative across Kano State.

Officials disclosed that the first phase of the screening exercise has covered 720 couples drawn from 24 local government areas. The medical tests are a compulsory requirement intended to assess the health status and compatibility of intending couples before the wedding ceremony.

The Hisbah Board directed applicants residing within the Kano metropolitan area to report to the headquarters of the Kano State Agency for the Control of AIDS in the Na’ibawa area for the screening process.

The board further explained that couples from the remaining local government areas would undergo similar medical examinations at a later date, with details of the schedule to be communicated in due course.

Applicants affected by the postponement were advised to remain patient and await official announcements regarding the next phase of the exercise.

The mass wedding programme was reintroduced by the administration of Abba Kabir Yusuf as part of broader social welfare efforts aimed at assisting vulnerable families and promoting stable family structures.

Government officials have also argued that the initiative could help address certain social challenges, including poverty-related barriers to marriage and other societal concerns affecting young people.

Mass weddings have been organized periodically in Kano over the years, with the state often providing financial support for wedding expenses, including accommodation, household items, and other essential materials needed by newly married couples.

The latest exercise underscores the government’s continued commitment to social intervention programmes targeted at easing economic hardship and supporting residents seeking to start families despite prevailing financial challenges.
