The Federal Government has released the final list of textbooks approved for use in Nigerian schools for the 2026–2028 academic period, alongside a new tracking system designed to improve transparency in the selection and procurement of instructional materials.
The Federal Ministry of Education announced the release in a statement issued on Monday by its Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade.
The approved list covers textbooks for Primary 1, Primary 4, Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS 1) and Senior Secondary School 1 (SS 1).
According to the ministry, each approved textbook has been assigned a unique Ranking/QR Tracking Code, which will enable schools, education authorities and other stakeholders to verify and monitor approved instructional materials.
The codes contain key information about each textbook, including its title, author or authors, publisher and year of publication.
The ministry said the tracking system was introduced to strengthen accountability and transparency throughout the process of selecting, procuring and using approved textbooks in schools.
“The introduction of the Ranking/QR Tracking Code represents an important step towards strengthening the monitoring and control of approved instructional materials and ensuring greater transparency in their selection, procurement and utilization,” the ministry said.
It explained that the process of generating and assigning the unique codes contributed to the time required to complete and validate the final approved list.
Second phase to cover four more classes
The ministry said the national textbook ranking exercise is being conducted in phases, with preparations for the second phase expected to begin following the completion and approval of the first phase.
The second phase will cover textbooks for Primary 2, Primary 5, JSS 2 and SS 2.
“The ranking exercise is being implemented in phases. Following the completion and approval of the first phase, preparations will commence for the second round, covering textbooks for Primary 2, Primary 5, JSS 2 and SS 2,” the statement said.
The same Ranking/QR Tracking Code system will also be applied to textbooks approved under the second phase.
FG directs schools, publishers to comply
The ministry urged publishers, schools, education authorities, procurement agencies and other relevant stakeholders to consult the official approved list before selecting or procuring textbooks for the affected classes.
It also directed stakeholders to comply with the approved list when providing and using textbooks in schools.
The Federal Ministry of Education said the exercise formed part of the Federal Government’s efforts to ensure that teachers and learners have access to quality instructional materials that are aligned with the approved national curriculum.
It added that the initiative was also aimed at strengthening transparency and accountability in the provision and distribution of textbooks across Nigerian schools.
The complete 2026–2028 approved textbook list, including the unique Ranking/QR Tracking Code assigned to each textbook, has been made available through the ministry’s designated platform.
