The Kano State High Court No. 2 has sentenced Auwalu Adamu, a resident of Yantaji Village in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State, to death by hanging for culpable homicide.
The court also handed Adamu a life imprisonment sentence for armed robbery.
Justice Yusuf Ubale delivered the judgment on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, after finding Adamu guilty of the offences brought against him by the Kano State Government.
The prosecution charged him under Sections 221(b) and 298(c) of the Penal Code, Cap. 105, Laws of Kano State 1991, as amended.
The case arose from an incident on July 31, 2021, at Kwarin Makera in Gamoji Village, Gaya Local Government Area of Kano State.
Adamu was accused of attacking Saleh Audu Barau at about 8 p.m. and repeatedly stabbing him in the face with a knife.
During the trial, the prosecution called five witnesses before closing its case. Adamu subsequently testified in his own defence but did not present any additional witnesses.
After considering the evidence and submissions from both sides, Justice Ubale convicted Adamu and imposed the sentences prescribed by law.
Reacting to the judgment, Kano State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Abdulkarim Kabiru Maude, commended the Chief State Counsel, Barrister Hannatu Abdulmalik, for her diligence and professionalism in prosecuting the case.
Maude said the judgment reflected the ministry’s commitment to pursuing justice and protecting the lives and property of residents.
He further pledged that the ministry would continue to work with the judiciary, security agencies and other relevant stakeholders to ensure the effective prosecution of criminal cases in accordance with the law.
