The political crisis rocking the Ondo State House of Assembly deepened on Tuesday as lawmakers reportedly secured 21 signatures in a move to impeach Speaker Olamide Oladiji over allegations surrounding the handling of ₦44 million reportedly received from the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC).
Sources within the Assembly told the media that the Speaker did not resign despite mounting pressure from lawmakers who had earlier given him the option of stepping down quietly to avoid a public showdown.
According to the sources, the failure of the Speaker to resign has intensified tensions within the Assembly, with members now pushing ahead with impeachment plans.
“The Speaker did not resign,” a source familiar with the development said.
“The House has reportedly gotten 21 signatures to impeach him. The drama is still on.”
The latest development comes hours after the media exclusively reported that lawmakers were expected to determine the political fate of Speaker Oladiji and Deputy Speaker Ololade Gbegudu during Tuesday’s plenary following allegations linked to the reported ₦44 million received from OSOPADEC.
Sources had alleged that the Speaker, Deputy Speaker and Clerk of the House, Benjamin Jaiyeola, handled the funds without informing other lawmakers.
The crisis further escalated earlier on Tuesday when Hon. Dr. Olawumi Fayemi-Obayelu, who represents Ilaje Constituency II, alleged that she had narrowly escaped an assassination attempt and had received repeated threats over what she described as her investigation into alleged bribery, forgery and corruption involving the Speaker and OSOPADEC.
The lawmaker insisted that no amount of intimidation would stop her from exposing alleged financial misconduct within the Assembly.
Fayemi-Obayelu also reaffirmed what she described as the position of two-thirds of members of the House that the Speaker should resign or face the consequences prescribed by the Assembly.
As of the time of filing this report, it remained unclear whether lawmakers would proceed immediately with impeachment proceedings during the next plenary or whether fresh political interventions would be made to resolve the crisis.
Efforts to obtain comments from Speaker Oladiji on the latest development were unsuccessful, as he had yet to publicly respond to the allegations surrounding the reported OSOPADEC funds or the reported impeachment move.
The latest development comes months after Speaker Oladiji survived an impeachment attempt by some lawmakers.
In November 2025, Oladiji dismissed moves by 12 lawmakers seeking his removal, insisting that the allegations against him were politically motivated and without merit.
The 26-member Assembly, had at the time been sharply divided, with 14 lawmakers backing the Speaker while 12 others stayed away from legislative activities amid the crisis.
The aggrieved lawmakers had accused Oladiji of financial misappropriation and withholding financial records from members.
However, the Speaker rejected the allegations, insisting that the dissenting lawmakers were acting out of personal grievances and attempting to hold the House hostage over demands they had allegedly made to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
The latest crisis also comes against the backdrop of increasing scrutiny of OSOPADEC’s financial management.
Earlier this month, it was reported that the Ondo State Auditor-General queried seven OSOPADEC contracts worth about ₦6.7 billion after the commission failed to produce procurement and contract documents requested during the 2025 audit.
The audit raised concerns over transparency in the award of several multi-billion-naira contracts, while independent checks by SaharaReporters showed that some beneficiary companies had only recently been incorporated and another could not be traced on official Corporate Affairs Commission records.
The latest audit findings followed earlier allegations of financial impropriety within OSOPADEC.
In February, it was reported that Governor Aiyedatiwa redeployed the commission’s Secretary, Princess Abike Bayo-Ilawole, to the Ondo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) as a Permanent Secretary following allegations involving the diversion of ₦463 million from OSOPADEC’s capital account.
Bayo-Ilawole denied any wrongdoing, insisting that the funds were released for approved projects executed through direct labour and that all necessary procedures were followed.
She was also questioned by the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) alongside two other senior OSOPADEC officials over the allegations.
The developments have intensified public scrutiny of the management of funds allocated to OSOPADEC, the intervention agency established to drive development in Ondo State’s oil-producing communities.

Police Arrest 1,198 Suspects, Rescue 166 Kidnap Victims – IGP
The Nigeria Police Force has announced the arrest of 1,198 criminal suspects nationwide in just over one month, alongside the rescue of 166 kidnapped victims.
Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu stated this on Tuesday at the monthly conference with strategic senior officers, noting that the Force would intensify intelligence-driven operations against violent crimes across the country.
According to Disu, the arrests were recorded between June 9 and July 21, 2026 and disclosed that the suspects include 151 arrested for murder and culpable homicide, 117 for armed robbery, 151 for kidnapping, 104 suspected cultists, and 169 persons arrested for unlawful possession of firearms, among others.
The police also recovered 166 assorted firearms, 1,475 rounds of ammunition of various calibres and 47 stolen vehicles during the operations.
Highlighting recent operational successes, Disu praised security agencies for the successful rescue of abducted students and teachers in Oyo State, describing the operation as a model of effective collaboration among the Nigeria Police Force, the Armed Forces, intelligence agencies and members of the public.
He said the rescue demonstrated the value of intelligence gathering, careful planning and inter-agency cooperation.
However, the police boss warned against complacency, stressing that operational success should inspire greater commitment rather than relaxation.
“We cannot let a success like Oyo breed complacency. Every achievement should push us to improve further, not to relax,” he said.
The IGP directed commissioners of police to develop command-specific security strategies based on the realities in their respective states while ensuring that all deployments are guided by credible intelligence rather than routine.
Meanwhile, the IGP has also decorated 30 newly promoted senior officers and charged them to justify their elevation through exemplary leadership, integrity and professionalism amid Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
The promotion ceremony saw the decoration of 13 Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) and 17 Commissioners of Police (CPs).
Addressing the officers, the IGP described the promotion as both a reward for years of dedicated service and a vote of confidence in their ability to provide effective leadership at a time when the nation faces terrorism, kidnapping, banditry, cybercrime and other violent crimes.
“You are stepping into higher command while our officers face real strain—a demanding security environment, long separations from family, and the daily weight of public expectation,” Disu said.

Safe schools: Senate extends probe into TETFund, NELFUND, UBEC, others
The Senate, yesterday, broadened its investigation into the Safe Schools Initiative (SSI), extending the probe to key education and social intervention agencies, including the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, and the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA).
The lawmakers also granted the Senate ad-hoc committee investigating the initiative an additional three weeks to conclude its assignment, saying that a wider inquiry is necessary to fully assess the management of education-related intervention funds and student welfare programmes.
The resolution followed a motion moved by the Committee Chairman, Orji Uzor Kalu (APC, Abia North), under Orders 41 and 51 of the Senate Standing Orders 2026 (as amended).
Kalu said the committee’s preliminary findings showed that the implementation of the Safe Schools Initiative was closely linked to several agencies responsible for education financing, student support and humanitarian interventions.
According to him, investigating the programme in isolation would leave critical gaps in the Senate’s oversight function.
He said that the expanded mandate would enable the committee to produce a comprehensive report capable of strengthening accountability, improving transparency and ensuring that intervention funds achieve their intended objectives.
However, the investigation will further cover TETFund’s security and infrastructure interventions in tertiary institutions, NELFUND’s loan disbursement processes, administrative efficiency and student access framework, as well as UBEC’s interventions in the basic education sector.
Kalu said that the committee needed additional time as some critical aspects of the investigation, including planned visits to key locations, had yet to be completed.
The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, following a voice-vote by the lawmakers, who unanimously approved the request, granted the committee a three-week extension.
