The All Progressives Congress (APC) has expanded its presidential campaign council for the 2027 general election, bringing several influential opposition-aligned political figures, including Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke; and Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, into the campaign structure for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
The revised council, according to the list released ahead of its inauguration, assigns key state-level responsibilities to the three governors and other political heavyweights as the ruling party intensifies preparations for the 2027 presidential contest.
President Tinubu is expected to inaugurate the expanded council at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday.
Under the new arrangement, Wike, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has been appointed coordinator of the Tinubu campaign in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory.
Soludo, who governs Anambra State on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), will coordinate the campaign in Anambra, while Adeleke, who secured his re-election on the Accord platform, has been named coordinator for Osun State.
The inclusion of the three governors is politically significant, given that none of them belongs to the APC.
Their appointments further reflect the Tinubu campaign’s strategy of building a broad political coalition ahead of the 2027 election.
The expanded council follows the initial structure unveiled by the APC on August 22, with former Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari, appointed Director-General.
Under the revised structure, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq will serve as Deputy Vice-Chairmen I, II and III respectively.
Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni was appointed Deputy Director-General I for the North, while Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin will serve as Deputy Director-General II for the region.
For the South, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu were appointed Deputy Director-Generals I and II respectively.
The APC also appointed all 32 of its governors as campaign coordinators for their respective states, while Sharafadeen Alli, Mohammed Abubakar and Chijioke Chukwu were named coordinators for Oyo, Bauchi and Abia states respectively.
Fourteen advisers were also listed in the expanded campaign structure.
They include former APC national chairman Bisi Akande, former Ogun State Governor Segun Osoba, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, Florence Ita-Giwa, former Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun, former Osun State Governor Iyiola Omisore and Minister of Finance Wale Edun.
Yari had earlier disclosed that the council’s inaugural meeting would hold on October 14, ahead of the formal campaign flag-off scheduled for Kaduna on October 24.
The development comes as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general election, with the ruling APC seeking to consolidate Tinubu’s political base and broaden its support beyond its traditional structure.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) opened the campaign window for presidential and National Assembly candidates on August 19. The campaign period is scheduled to end on January 14, 2027.
Tinubu is expected to face a major opposition challenge, with former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi of the New Democratic Congress (NDC) among the prominent figures positioning themselves for the presidential contest.
With the expanded campaign council now taking shape, the 2027 presidential race is expected to enter a more intense phase as the major political blocs mobilise their structures and seek to consolidate support across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
