Finnish newspaper Yle reported the development on Thursday, noting that the appellate court affirmed the decision of the Päijät-Häme District Court, which convicted Ekpa last year.

The charges stemmed from Ekpa’s alleged activities aimed at re-establishing an independent state of Biafra in southeastern Nigeria.

In its original verdict, the district court ruled that Ekpa had used his substantial social media following to fuel tensions in the region between August 2021 and November 2024.

Ekpa subsequently appealed the conviction and sentence, asking the appellate court to overturn the ruling.

However, the Court of Appeal upheld his conviction on the same offences but reduced his prison term after considering the circumstances surrounding his actions. The court observed that the situation in the Biafran region closely resembled a civil war but did not meet the legal definition of one.

During the proceedings, Ekpa argued that his involvement was not driven by terrorist intent, pointing to the political turmoil in the Biafran region.

Meanwhile, the prosecutor also appealed the district court’s ruling, arguing that the six-year prison sentence was insufficient to reflect the seriousness of Ekpa’s offences.
