Patrick Cole, veteran journalist and father of Tonye Cole, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Rivers in 2023, is dead.
In a statement he personally signed on Saturday, President Bola Tinubu said Cole died at 86, following a distinguished career in journalism, diplomacy and public service.
Cole served as managing director of Daily Times between 1976 and 1980. He was also Nigeria’s ambassador to Brazil from 1987 to 1990.
He reportedly held a diplomatic posting in Argentina and represented Nigeria at the United Nations (UN) and the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on several occasions.
According to reports citing family sources, Cole died in London on Saturday.
Tinubu said he received the news of Cole’s death with “profound sadness”, describing him as “a distinguished diplomat, journalist, politician, and public servant”.
“Ambassador Cole devoted his life to national service, bringing distinction to his work in diplomacy, journalism and politics,” the president said.
“His career reflected the enduring value of dialogue, tact, mutual respect and the pursuit of shared interests in advancing national development and international cooperation.”
Tinubu said Cole’s contributions to Nigeria’s media landscape were particularly notable.
“As Managing Director of the Daily Times, he upheld the vital role of the press in holding public officials accountable, speaking truth to power, and strengthening democratic governance,” he said.
“His legacy in journalism and public life remains an enduring part of our national story.”
The president said Cole had witnessed defining moments in Nigeria’s history and contributed to the country’s development through his work in the media, diplomacy and public service.
According to Tinubu, Cole’s life stood as a testament to the value of experience, principled engagement and commitment to the public good.
The president condoled with the deceased’s family, friends and associates, praying that memories of his remarkable life would bring them comfort and strength at this difficult time.
