WHO Declares Nigeria Ebola-Free After Ebola Patient’s Evacuation To Switzerland

The World Health Organisation (WHO) Regional Director for Africa, Prof. Mohamed Janabi, has said Nigeria currently has no active Ebola case following the medical evacuation of the country’s index patient and her husband to Switzerland.

Janabi disclosed this on Monday in a post on his X handle, saying Nigeria would, however, maintain surveillance over 52 contacts linked to the patient.

He said the patient, a 42-year-old Ugandan-born wife of a Swiss diplomat based in Abuja, and her husband were evacuated to Switzerland earlier on Monday for continued medical care and monitoring.

“With the evacuation of the patient and her husband, Nigeria currently has no Ebola cases. However, vigilance remains critical,” Janabi said.

The patient was flown out of Nigeria aboard a medical evacuation aircraft from the private jet wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, following an improvement in her condition.

Janabi said Nigerian medical teams had successfully managed the patient through the acute phase of the illness before she became stable enough to be evacuated.

He added that the patient’s husband, who has remained asymptomatic, would continue to be monitored in Switzerland.

“Earlier this morning, the Ebola patient in Nigeria and her contact, who is also her husband, were medically evacuated to Switzerland,” he said.

According to the WHO official, Nigeria would continue the close follow-up of 52 contacts, while Switzerland would assume responsibility for the patient’s continued treatment and the monitoring of her husband, identified as contact number 53.

The development means Nigeria currently has no confirmed Ebola patient within the country, although health authorities are expected to maintain surveillance and contact-tracing measures to guard against further transmission.
