In a fiery declaration that has set the political space abuzz, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Mr. Peter Obi, has vowed to meet riggers of the 2027 general election with equal force, warning that electoral fraud will no longer go unchallenged.
Addressing a charged crowd of supporters at a campaign gathering ahead of the 2027 polls, Obi, visibly emphatic, drew a battle line against election manipulators.
His words were blunt, unfiltered and deliberate.
“Let me tell you. You didn’t ask what we are going to do if people rig the election next year. Let me assure you, number one, this coming election, this coming election, we will rig those who rig it,” he thundered, to loud cheers.
The former Anambra State governor said the era of brazen electoral robbery must end, vowing that under his watch, the sanctity of the ballot would be restored.
“And let me assure you, number two, if elected the president of Nigeria, nobody will rig the election in this country again,” he declared.
Obi, who anchored his address on electoral reform and party discipline, said his administration would overhaul the electoral system and strip riggers of impunity.
He went further to propose a strict legal framework for eligibility, insisting that minimum educational qualifications must be verifiable and non-negotiable.
“Our law will be strict. For you to contest the election, you must have attended a primary school, you must have attended a secondary school, and it will be visible, it will be clear. If you didn’t attend any of them or forge your certificate, you go to jail,” he warned.
In what appears a direct warning to the electoral umpire and political actors, Obi said election rigging would carry a prison sentence.
“Any INEC official, anybody who is involved with the election under my watch, that rigs the election, will go to jail,” he said.
He maintained that Nigeria must return to a culture of law and order, where no one is above the law.
“Under my watch, Nigeria must be a country that has a law, and both from number one person to the last person must obey the rule of law. Nobody will be above the law,” Obi insisted.
Closing with his signature mantra, the NDC candidate reaffirmed his mission to birth a new nation.
“We want to change Nigeria. A new Nigeria is possible. A new Nigeria is possible. And that new Nigeria will be okay,” he said.
