Iceland elects businesswoman Halla Tomasdottir as president

Tomasdottir, a businesswoman and investor, has won Iceland’s presidential election, topping a crowded field of candidates in which the top three finishers were women, the country’s national broadcast service reported.
Tomasdottir was elected to the largely ceremonial post with 34.3% of the vote, defeating former Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir, with 25.2%, and Halla Hrund Logadottir, with 15.5%, RUV said Sunday.
Tomasdottir, 55, campaigned as someone who was above party politics and could help open discussions on fundamental issues such as the effect of social media on the mental health of young people, Iceland’s development as a tourist destination and the role of artificial intelligence.
She will replace President Gudni Th. Johannesson, who did not seek re-election after two four-year terms. Tomasdottir will take office on Aug. 1.
Iceland, a Nordic island nation located in the North Atlantic, has about 384,000 people and a long tradition of electing women to high office. Vigdis Finbogadottir was the first democratically elected female president of any nation when she became Iceland’s head of state in 1980.
The country has also seen two women serve as prime minister in recent years, providing stability during years of political turmoil.
Johanna Sigurdardottir led the government from 2009-2013, after the global financial crisis ravaged Iceland’s economy.
Jakobsdottir became prime minister in 2017, leading a broad coalition that ended the cycle of crises that had triggered three elections in four years. She resigned in April to run for president.
Tomasdottir first rose to prominence during the financial crisis, when she was hailed as the co-founder of Audur Capital, one of the few Icelandic investment firms that survived the upheaval.
She is currently on leave as chief executive of the B Team, a non-profit organization that works to promote workplace diversity and has offices in New York and London.
The All Progressives Congress, APC has won all 20 Chairmanship and 236 Councillorship seats in the Ogun LG Polls.
Naijablitznews reports that the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) on Sunday, declared all the 20 chairmanship candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winners of Saturday’s local government elections conducted in the state.
The Chairman of the commission, Babatunde Osibodu also declared all 236 APC councillorship candidates as winners of the election while presenting the official results of the polls at the commission’s headquarters at Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta, the state capital.
Osibodu said the ruling party, APC, emerged victorious across all the 20 local government areas and 236 wards in the state by polling a total of 613,156 votes cast in the exercise which witnessed major political parties like the Accord Party (AP), African Action Congress (AAC), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Action Democratic Party (ADP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), participating.
Other political parties that participated in the exercise included the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Labour Party (LP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Young Progressive Party (YPP), Action People’s Party (APP), Action Alliance (AA), Boot Party (BP), People’s Redemption Party (PRP), National Rescue Movement (NRM) and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa as the winner of the guber election conducted in Ondo State on Saturday.
Aiyedatiwa, who is the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the election.
He polled a total of 366,781 votes to defeat his closest rival in the election, Agboola Ajayi, who is the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party in the election.
The APC cleared all 18 local government areas.
While the PDP polled a total of 117,845 votes, the Labour Party (LP) polled 1,162 votes and the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) polled 2,692 votes.
Prof Olayemi Akinwunmi announced the result of the Ondo governorship election at the State headquarters of INEC in Akure.
Victor Osimhen: “I used to send money to one of my childhood friends but one day he told me about a business he wants to start and needed financial support.
“I sent him €5k but he didn’t appreciate it and even told me he read on news that I earned 1 million euros every week and he was expecting like €50k to start up this business. I was so mad that I wanted to reverse the transaction but I couldn’t.
“That money €5k can only buy a pair of shoes in Europe but in Nigeria, it’s a lot of money.
“Nobody sent me 1 dollar before I came to Europe, I hustle day and night, I sold bottled water on the street. People should learn to appreciate whatever they get as gifts not have this sense of entitlement “.
