NFF opens on why Labbadia snubbed Super Eagles job

Stringent regulations of German tax authorities have aborted the agreement between the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and Coach Bruno Labbadia for the latter to mount the saddle as Head Coach of Nigeria’s Senior Men Team, Super Eagles.
President of NFF, Ibrahim Musa Gusau, disclosed this in a statement late Friday.
“We have been on the tax issue for the past three days, and I told him clearly that there was no way the NFF will agree to offset the concomitant tax percentage on his salary that will be demanded by German tax authorities.
“It is not possible for us to shoulder the responsibility of shelling out another money, between 32% to 40% of his salary, after paying the agreed monthly wage.
“The NFF and Mr. Labbadia reached an agreement in principle before we made the announcement that he would become the Head Coach of the Super Eagles. The tax details were never part of our discussions, and he had personally agreed to all terms before the tax issue came up. We were doing our best to be flexible in the discussions but he was adamant that the NFF had to pay the full tax amount as well. We simply cannot do that,” said on Friday evening.
Consequently, Technical Director of NFF, Coach Augustine Eguavoen, will now take charge of the Super Eagles for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Benin Republic in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on September 7, and Rwanda in Kigali, on September 10.
It will be Eguavoen’s fourth stint in charge of the three-time African champions, after earlier experience in 2005-2007, 2010 and 2022.

PSG win Ligue 1 title with six games to go, remain unbeaten

Paris Saint-Germain of France has secured the Ligue 1 title on Saturday with 1-0 win at home to Angers enough to gave them an unassailable lead over nearest challengers Monaco with six games of the season still to play.
This is PSG’s 13th title overall, a French record, and their 11th in the last 13 seasons, this highlighting the extent to which the Parisian have dominated the league since being taken over by Qatar Sports Investments in 2011
PSG still have the chance of repeating last season’s domestic treble and, with a Champions League quarter-final coming up against Aston Villa next week, a first European title is in a serious possibility.
Winning titles is nothing new to the French champions but PSG team under Luis Enrique has helped turn them from a team long associated with egos and big-money into a vibrant, youthful and thrilling team to watch.

Osimhen’s double sends Mourinho’s Fenerbahce out of Turkish Cup

Victor Osimhen delivered a stunning performance on Wednesday as his brace secured Galatasaray a 2-1 victory over Fenerbahce in the final stage of the Turkish Cup, eliminating José Mourinho’s side from the competition.
Osimhen opened the scoring in the 10th minute, putting Galatasaray ahead with a well-taken shot from the edge of the box.
The Nigerian striker then doubled his tally in the 27th minute from the penalty spot, giving his team a comfortable 2-0 lead before halftime.
Fenerbahce managed to pull one back just before the break, with Sebastian Szymański finding the net in first-half stoppage time (45+1’), but it was not enough to turn the tide.
Despite late attempts to equalize, including substitutions involving Mert Yandaş and Kerem Demirbay in the 90+2 minute, Mourinho’s side fell short as Galatasaray held on for the win.
