AFCON 2025 qualifier: Super Eagles can adopt any formation – Eguavoen
Super Eagles caretaker coach, Augustine Eguavoen says the team have the quality to adopt any style of play.
Eguavoen opted for a 3-4-3 formation in the Super Eagles 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying tie against Benin Republic on Saturday.
The Super Eagles ran out 3-0 winners in the encounter, with Ademola Lookman scoring a brace, while substitute Victor Osimhen was also on target.
The 59-year-old stated that the formation against the Benin Republic was successful.
“The formation is only information. We have players of quality, and we can decide to play with any system.
“There is something we discussed, and I slept over it, and I know that with the calibre of players we have, we can decide to play any formation and be successful,” Eguavoen told reporters.
“The players are always there, and when much is expected by Nigerians, that is when you see them performing. We have been getting a lot of backlash, and the boys didn’t know this.
“And we know we have the calibre and quality to beat any team, but we have to respect teams anyway.
“So anybody can come here and do the same thing. It’s the mindset, and we have the potential, but it is how you check out your opponent and give information [to players], and then they will go out and do the job.”
The Super Eagles will shift attention to their next game against Amavubi of Rwanda.
The encounter will hold at Amahoro Stadium, Kigali on Tuesday

Arsenal’s Odegard to be sidelined for months over injury
Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard will be out “for a while” with an ankle injury he suffered on international duty with Norway, manager Mikel Arteta said on Wednesday.
Odegaard twisted his ankle in Norway’s Nations League match against Austria earlier this month.
His national team doctor had suggested he would be sidelined for a “minimum of three weeks”.
“After everything was scanned, they showed that there was some damage, especially in one of the ligaments in the ankle so we’re going to miss him,” Arteta told reporters ahead of Arsenal’s Champions League opener against Atalanta on Thursday.
“I don’t want to (put a timeframe on it) because I am not a doctor but it is something quite significant so we’re going to lose him for a while — hopefully not months, but let’s see.”
Arsenal, Premier League runners-up last season, visit reigning champions Manchester City on Sunday.
The Gunners beat local rivals Tottenham 1-0 last weekend to sit second in the early Premier League table, two points behind Man City.

Cristiano Ronaldo Diagnosed Down With Viral Infection-Club
By Mario Deepromoter
Al Nassr struggled in Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence on Monday, when the Saudi club kicked off the revamped Asian Champions League with a 1-1 draw against Al Shorta in Iraq.
Al Nassr captain Ronaldo did not travel with the squad for the match in Baghdad, with the club issuing a statement a day before stating that the Portuguese superstar had been diagnosed with a viral infection.
The statement read: “Al-Nassr captain Cristiano Ronaldo wasn’t feeling well today and was diagnosed with a viral infection.
“The team’s doctor confirmed he needs to rest and stay at his place.
“As a result, he will not be travelling with the team to Iraq today. We wish a speedy recovery to our captain.”
Al Nassr, who were knocked out of last season’s Asian Champions League in the quarter-finals by eventual champions Al Ain, were given a dream start in the Iraqi capital, when full-back Sultan Al Ghannam met Otavio’s astute, first-time pass on 14 minutes to finish low past Al Shorta goalkeeper Ahmed Basil
Ronaldo is yet to win a major trophy with Al-Nassr since joining the Saudi club.
