Iran Nabs Italian Female Journalist For Alleged Violation Of Islamic Law
The Iranian government state has confirmed that it had arrested an Italian journalist Cecilia Sala for allegedly violating Islamic law.
The arrest was swiftly condemned by Italy as “unacceptable,” AP reports.
Sala, an Italian citizen, entered Iran on December 13, 2024, with a journalist visa, and was detained on December 19, 2024, for breaching the laws of the Islamic Republic, the official IRNA news agency reported, citing a statement from the Iranian Ministry of Culture.
However, no further details about the violation were provided.
The ministry added that the case is under investigation. It also oversees the accreditation of foreign journalists in Iran.
Sala, who is reportedly 29 years old, last posted on X (formerly Twitter) on December 17, sharing a link to a podcast titled “A Conversation on Patriarchy in Tehran.”
Sala had previously reported from Ukraine on the war involving Iran’s ally, Russia.
Chora Media, an Italian podcast publisher for which Sala works, confirmed that she had traveled to Iran on a journalist visa and was scheduled to return on December 20.
On Friday, Italy condemned her arrest as “unacceptable” and confirmed that she was being held at Tehran’s Evin prison.
Italy’s ambassador to Tehran, Paola Amadei, has visited Sala.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stated on Saturday that efforts to secure her release were “complicated.”
Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni’s office said she was “closely monitoring the complex situation.”
Iran’s Ministry of Culture confirmed on Monday that Sala had been granted consular assistance and had been in contact with her family by phone.
Sala’s arrest came just days after the United States and Italy arrested two Iranian nationals over alleged export violations linked to a deadly attack on American servicemen.
The two men, Mahdi Mohammad Sadeghi and Mohammad Abedininajafabadi, were accused of conspiring to export advanced electronic components from the U.S. to Iran in violation of export control and sanctions laws, according to a U.S. Department of Justice statement.
One of the suspects was arrested in Italy at Washington’s request.
The statement claimed the exported technology was used in a January drone strike that killed three U.S. servicemen in Jordan.
Iran has denied involvement in the attack. Earlier this month, Tehran formally protested the arrests to the Italian chargé d’affaires and the Swiss ambassador in Tehran, who represents U.S. interests there.
Several other Europeans remain imprisoned in Iran, which has conducted multiple prisoner exchanges with Western governments in recent years, often mediated by Oman or Qatar.
For example, French citizens Cecile Kohler and Jacques Paris have been detained since May 2022 on espionage charges, which carry the death penalty in Iran.
In June, Iran released two Swedes, including a European Union diplomat, in exchange for a former official held in Sweden, in a deal mediated by Oman.
In 2023, Oman also brokered the release of six European detainees in Iran, including Belgian aid worker Olivier Vandecasteele, who had been convicted of espionage and imprisoned for over a year.

NDLEA nabs popular Lagos socialite on new year day in her hideout over truck load of illicit drugs
… using different fronts to cover her drug deals
The long hands of the law finally caught up with a wanted drug kingpin and Lagos socialite, 61-year-old Alhaja Aishat Feyisara Ajoke Elediye on Wednesday 1st January 2025 in her mansion at Okota area of Lagos following the interception of a truckload illicit drug consignment from her staff same day.
Known in the drug underworld as “Iya Ruka”, Alhaja Ajoke as she is fondly called in social circle, has her true identity shrouded in mystery for years while she remained on the wanted list of NDLEA for leading one of the drug cartels operating from Mushin area of Lagos.
The lid was however blown off her invincibility on Wednesday 1st January 2025 when NDLEA operatives acting on intelligence intercepted a white Izuzu truck carrying 44 jumbo sacks containing 1,540 kilograms of imported cannabis and driven by one of her staff, 41-year-old Abideen Adio.
Thereafter, the operatives stormed her hideout at 33 Adebayo Oyewole street, off Ago Palace way, Okota, where they arrested her.
On the surface, Alhaja Ajoke is a businesswoman who imports fabrics and shoes from China but beneath is a massive illicit drug trade. She is also recognized as the Iyalaje of Blessing Sisters, an influential club of society women in Lagos.
In another major operation, NDLEA officers on Friday 27th December 2024 arrested a US-trained Hollywood and Nollywood filmmaker, Emeka Emmanuel Mbadiwe, who is also a motivational speaker at his Lekki Hotel room following the arrest of his partner, Uzoekwe Ugochukwu James, earlier same day at a warehouse in Ajao estate Ikeja, where he was sent by Mbadiwe to collect a shipment of 33 parcels of Loud, a strong strain of cannabis weighing 17.30 kilograms, which arrived the Import shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA Ikeja on 24th December 2024 from the United States on a Delta Airline flight, concealed in large wooden boxes.
In Kwara state, a fresh graduate Khadijat Abdulraheem, 24, and a 20-year-old student of the University of Ilorin, Ayomide Morakinyo were on Sunday 29th December 2024 arrested by NDLEA operatives at Tanke-University of Ilorin road, Oke Odo, Ilorin based on credible intelligence that they were producing and selling drug laced cupcakes to students in the community. When their apartment was searched, 42 pieces of drugged cakes were recovered from them.
An ex-convict, Sodade Sunday Eniola, who was arrested by operatives of the Tincan Command of NDLEA in June, 2024, for drug trafficking, prosecuted and sentenced to four years in prison has been arrested again by officers of the MMIA Strategic Command of the Agency for passport racketeering. When he was convicted by a Federal High Court in Lagos on 14th June 2024, the trial judge gave him an option of paying N750,000 fine, which he paid and was let go.
However, in series of operations in December 2024, NDLEA operatives at the export shed of the Lagos airport intercepted no fewer than 52 passports of different countries from shipments going to Canada, Russia, and other countries concealed in shoe soles and food items. Further investigations led to the arrest of four members of three syndicates involved in the racket.
The arrested suspects include: Sodade Sunday Eniola; Ayinde Saheed Awwal; Salaudeen Afeez Ayode; and Sheriff Adebayo Bamigbade. Both the exhibits and the suspects were on Monday 30th December 2024 handed over to the Zonal Command of the Nigerian Immigration Service in Lagos for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Not less than 316, 800 bottles of codeine-based syrup were recovered from two containers by NDLEA officers at the Port Harcourt Ports Complex, Onne Rivers state during a joint examination of the shipments with men of Nigeria Customs and other security agencies on Tuesday 31st December 2024. The seizure followed credible intelligence processed by the Port Harcourt Port Command of the Agency.
In Kano, NDLEA operatives on Tuesday 31st December 2024 raided Mafarki, Dan Dishe area of Dala LG where they recovered 149, 090 pills of tramadol and exol-5 from a local dealer, 45-year-old Ismail Muhammad.
With the same vigour, Commands and formations of the Agency across the country continued their War Against Drug Abuse, WADA, sensitization activities to schools, worship centres, work places and communities among others in the past week. These include: WADA sensitisation lecture to traders at Ido-Osi Central Market, Ido Ekiti, Ekiti state; and Muslim faithful during their Juma’at prayer at Birnin Kudu central mosque, Jigawa state, among others.
While commending the officers and men of MMIA, Lagos, Kano, PHPC and Kwara Commands of the Agency for the arrests and seizures, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) stated that their operational successes and those of their compatriots across the country especially their balanced approach to drug supply reduction and drug demand reduction efforts are well appreciated.

Panic as over 5000 hospitalised in UK diagnosed with flu as NHS laments
By Kayode Sanni-Arewa
Latest data shows there were 5,000 patients with the virus being treated in hospital at the end of last week – almost 3.5 times higher than the same week in 2023, although not as high as in 2022.
The head of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine told the BBC that pressure on hospitals is “unacceptably awful” and flu is pushing them to breaking point.
It comes as health officials warn about the impact of the very cold weather expected this weekend on vulnerable patients, and the health system.
Prof Julian Redhead, NHS national clinical director for urgent and emergency care, said the figures show “the pressure from flu was nowhere near letting up before we headed into the new year, skyrocketing to over 5,000 cases a day in hospital as of the end of last week and rising at a very concerning rate”.
“With what looks like an extreme cold snap expected right across England ahead of the weekend, we know the low temperatures can be dangerous for those who are vulnerable or have respiratory conditions,” he added.
Prof Redhead says people at risk should try to keep warm and make sure they are stocked up on any regular medication.
It is not unusual to see an increase in flu during winter. The UK Health Security Agency says “this was anticipated” and that is why it has been urging those eligible to have a free flu vaccine, particularly health and social care workers.
Some 33% of pregnant women, 37% of people in an at-risk group and 73% of over-65s have had the jab, according to the latest vaccination figures.
‘Lack of beds’
Hospitals have put extra beds in place this year to help deal with the pressure on admissions created by flu and other winter viruses, including Covid and norovirus (the winter vomiting bug).
NHS chiefs say they have also added more support for people who frequently need emergency services, with more care being delivered outside hospitals.
Matthew Taylor, chief executive of the NHS Confederation, said the NHS had done “all it could” in advance to reduce risk to patients, but the service remained in a position of “national vulnerability” with “intense pressures” starting to impact local services.
Figures for last week show some 12,200 patients were left waiting in ambulances for more than an hour before they could be cared for in hospital.
Dr Adrian Boyle, head of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that it was a very difficult time for both patients and staff.
“What we are seeing is ambulances are frequently stuck outside emergency departments, and our emergency departments are full.”
He said there was “an enormous amount of avoidable harm – excess deaths that shouldn’t be happening”.
Flu is the straw that is breaking the camel’s back – because we have this chronic lack of beds within our hospitals, and we don’t use those beds properly because we haven’t reformed social care,” he added.
His criticism comes on the day the health and social care secretary set out plans for reforming adult social care in England, although they are unlikely to be delivered before 2028 at the earliest.
A number of hospitals across different regions in England have restricted visits and asked patients and visitors to wear face masks to prevent further spread of flu.
In Scotland, there has also been a large rise in the number of people in hospital with flu. Earlier this week, First Minister John Swinney said the NHS was under “very significant pressures”.
A Welsh government spokesperson said there were continued “high levels of demand” on urgent and emergency care services this winter, and an increase in flu cases had added further pressure during the Christmas period.
What are flu symptoms?
Flu symptoms can progress very quickly and include:
a sudden high temperature
an aching body
feeling tired or exhausted
a dry cough
a sore throat
a headache
feeling, and being, sick
Children and adults are affected in a similar way.
Who is eligible for a free flu jab?
A free flu vaccine is available to those considered at higher risk of becoming seriously ill from flu during late autumn and early winter, including people:
aged 65 or over
with certain long-term health conditions
who are pregnant
who live in a care home
are the main carer for an elderly or disabled person, or receive a carer’s allowance
live with someone who has a weakened immune system
are a front-line health and social care worker
Children aged 2-3 and school-aged children are also offered a vaccine.
Anyone in eligible groups in England can book their vaccination through their GP surgery or local pharmacy, where available, or contact their employer if they are an NHS front-line worker.
People can also pay for vaccines privately at some pharmacies.
Why is flu so bad this year?
Flu creates problems every winter, being the season when viruses spread with ease, and can cause some to become very ill.
The severity of seasonal flu varies from year to year, depending on many factors, including which strains of the flu virus are most dominant and how many people are vaccinated against flu.
Why are some flu outbreaks so much worse than others?
A surge of flu appears to have hit earlier this winter than anticipated – in December, instead of January or February – with more people unwell and off work over the Christmas and New Year period, and some in need of hospital treatment.
People socialising with friends and family during the Christmas festivities will likely have added to the spread of the virus.
Health officials saw the flu wave coming, and have been urging people to take up the offer of a free flu vaccine for some time.
However, the number of people who have been vaccinated is lower than officials had hoped – just over a third of higher-risk adults have had the jab to date.
Several different strains of flu tend to circulate each winter, and the vaccine was created in advance to combat the current, predicted wave. According to health officials, the vaccine is doing its job.
Vaccines are particularly important in protecting against severe disease. Most people will recover from flu within a few weeks, but it can be serious, particularly if you have a long-term health condition or lower immunity.
Thousands of people die from flu-related illnesses each year.
