As testaments to the promise of the Force to adopt improved strategies in the fight against various forms of crimes and criminality across the country, the Nigeria Police Force has unveiled some recorded significant achievements in its efforts to curb crime.

In a press briefing at the FID-IRT headquarters on the 22nd of January, 2024, the operatives of the Nigeria Police Force confirmed the arrest of 179 armed robbery suspects, 100 kidnapping suspects, and 152 Murder/homicide suspects.

The Operatives added that 34 suspects connected with the unlawful possession of prohibited firearms, 77 rape suspects, 110 suspected cultists have also been arrested.

The success recorded by the Nigerian Police Force also includes the recovery of 73 various firearms, 310 ammunition of various calibers.

The Police was also able to recover 56 stolen vehicles and rescue 22 victims of kidnapping across the country.

The police also recorded several outstanding achievements including the arrest of Muhammed Kabir ‘m’ 36 years, and other members of his gang including Donald Okpere ‘m’, and Haruna Ibrahim ‘m’.

The gang operates by impersonating military personnel and defrauding victims of millions of naira, using fake alerts after purchasing gadgets and medical equipment.

In addition, the operatives arrested Sunday Okwo Ade ‘m’, Monday Solomon ‘m’, David Emmanuel ‘m’, and Shakiru Badmus ‘m’, who are part of a well-known gang that specializes in stealing motorcycles from farmers in various communities in Lagos and Ogun States. 15 motorcycles were recovered from this gang.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM., however, reaffirmed the commitment of the Force to remain steadfast to the core principle of policing which is the safeguarding of the lives and properties of the general populace and creating an enabling environment for the public to go about their daily activities peacefully.

Egbetokun assured that the Force will not relent in its pursuit of criminal elements and ensuring justice is served when due and appropriate as the extant laws of our country have laid out.

**What You Need to Know About EP

An electrophysiology study (EP study) is a test used to evaluate your heart’s electrical system and check for abnormal heart rhythms Natural electrical impulses coordinate the contractions of the different parts of the heart.

This creates the heartbeat or heart rhythm and keeps blood flowing the way it should during an EP study, your doctor inserts small, thin wire electrodes into a vein in the groin (or neck, in some cases).

Your doctor then threads the wire electrodes through the vein and into the heart. To do this, your doctor uses a special type of live X-ray “movie,” called fluoroscopy.

Once in the heart, the electrodes measure the heart’s electrical signals. Electrical signals are also sent through the electrodes to stimulate the heart tissue to try to induce the abnormal heart rhythm.

…FG to invest ₦6bn in fibre optic expansion

The Minister of Communication, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has attributed the recent 50 percent increase in telecommunication tariffs to inflation and rising operational costs.

The Minister disclosed this during the 2025 budget defense session held by the joint House of Representatives and Senate Committees on Communication, on Tuesday in Abuja.

Explaining the rationale behind the tariff hike, Dr. Tijani stated that the move aligns with broader economic trends where increased tariffs lead to higher consumer prices due to added costs on imported goods.

The Minister also revealed plans by the Federal Government to invest ₦6 billion in the deployment of 90,000 kilometers of fiber optic cables, increasing Nigeria’s current coverage from 35,000 kilometers to 125,000 kilometers, and he described this initiative as a critical step towards boosting communication infrastructure and fostering growth in key sectors of the economy.

“Tariffs act as a sales tax, causing a one-off price increase rather than sustained inflation.

“Outside of South Africa and maybe Egypt or Tunisia, many African countries face a significant deficit in fiber optic cable coverage.

“This is going to become a big business. We want Nigerian companies not only to lay cables within Nigeria but also to provide these services for neighboring countries. And we want our people to be the workforce driving this transformation,” he said.

Dr. Tijani who emphasised the importance of communication infrastructure in ensuring security and economic development, highlighted the historical reliance on private investment for telecommunications infrastructure, which has often prioritized profitable urban areas over rural communities.

“Private companies only invest where they see potential returns.

“They use tools like night-time satellite data to identify economic activity, represented by lights, and focus their investments in those areas. This has left many underserved regions without proper infrastructure. Addressing this disparity is a priority for us,” he explained.

The Minister, however, lamented the inadequate funding of the Ministry, which he said hampers its ability to fulfill its mandate effectively.

“The Ministry is underfunded compared to agencies like the NCC. We lack the necessary resources and software to track revenue-generating activities efficiently. With better funding, the Ministry could generate significantly more revenue and enhance its impact,” he said.

In his remarks, Senator Shuaib Salisu, Co-Chairman of the Senate Committee on Communication, acknowledged the critical contributions of the communication sector to Nigeria’s economic growth. He called for a review of the Ministry’s 2025 proposed budget to ensure it is adequately equipped to deliver on its mandate.

Following discussions, the Committee adopted a motion urging the Committees on Appropriation to consider an upward revision of the Ministry’s budget for 2025.
