Aisha Suleiman, a teenager who was falsely accused of poisoning five people with pepper soup, has shared her harrowing experience following her exoneration.

In an interview with ITV Radio, Suleiman recounted the traumatic events that nearly cost her life. She explained that the accusations stemmed from tensions with her ex-boyfriend after she ended their relationship. His father had barred her from visiting their home, and on the day of the tragic incident, she was nowhere near the scene, which occurred in Afashio.

The false allegation spread rapidly on social media after a post featuring Suleiman’s photo accused her of poisoning her ex-boyfriend and four of his friends. As the claim went viral, an enraged mob confronted her, subjected her to public humiliation, and even tied her up. The situation escalated when they doused her with petrol, preparing to set her ablaze. However, law enforcement arrived just in time to prevent the attack.

Suleiman was subsequently arrested and charged in court. Fortunately, human rights activists intervened, demanding a thorough investigation. The inquiry revealed that the victims had actually died from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by generator fumes, not from food poisoning.

With the truth uncovered, Suleiman was cleared of all charges, bringing an end to her ordeal. Her case highlights the dangers of misinformation and mob justice, emphasizing the need for proper investigations before making accusations.

“Those who were on their way to the church saw a crowd running out of the premises. They were told that at least seven armed men had invaded the church and abducted some members, including the seminarian,” he said.

The residents said they pursued the kidnappers but were unable to do much because they were unarmed while the abductors were heavily armed.

He said members of the community were willing and able to protect themselves and enter the surrounding forests to search for the kidnappers.

However, the residents, who were gripped by fear following the incident, questioned how they could carry out such an operation without weapons.

Efforts to obtain a reaction from officials of the Enugu State Police Command were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
