Barrister Kamorudeen Ogunlana has officially taken over as the Ninth Clerk to the National Assembly (CNA) since 1993.
The handover ceremony took place on Saturday evening at the National Assembly complex, Abuja, with management staff and dignitaries in attendance.
During the event, the outgoing CNA, Sani Magaji Tambuwal, expressed gratitude and formally transferred authority, and stated: “I formally hand over this document on the National Assembly to Kamorudeen Ogunlana.”
In his acceptance speech, Barrister Ogunlana praised his predecessor’s leadership and integrity, and emphasised the significance of the office of the CNA.
He said: “Today is historic. I want to start by congratulating the CNA. It is an achievement for you to start a journey and complete it. It is not just to complete it, you completed it with your reputation intact.
“The office of the Clerk to the National Assembly is one of the few offices that the Commission actually created. You may see some Chief Executives, Perm Secs, no, no, no. The Clerk to the National Assembly is one of the few offices that the Commission actually created.
“Within the National Assembly Service, apart from the Public Complaint Commission, it’s only the Clerk to the National Assembly that is mentioned. Now that position is not just cosmetic, we all know the role of the Clerk to the National Assembly, and that role is actually evolving.”
Ogunlana likened the Clerk’s responsibilities to those of a Head of Service, managing thousands of staff, legislative aides, and high-ranking officials.
“Today, when I look at the Clerk, I see the equivalent of Head of Service. Some of you feel maybe the Clerk is an equivalent of Perm Sec, no, we’ve moved beyond that.
“It doesn’t just end there, we are talking of somebody that is managing over 4,000 staff within this confined space. We are talking about a person that manages over 7,000 Legislative Aides, then not to talk of the VIPs – the lawmakers.
“Within this space, we have the number 3 and the number 4 Citizens. Within this space.
“Do you know what it means for the President of this country to come to your domain? Do you know what it takes to host the President? Anytime they say the President is coming, for us, it’s like a one-month affair, we don’t sleep! But this man was able to navigate those terrains successfully”.
He commended Tambuwal for mentoring his successor, asserting that, “No matter how good you are, if you don’t groom your successor, you are a failure in the area. This man actually groomed his successor.
“Now, I’ve heard people talking about successor, successor, this man has actually passed the first test of leadership. Why do I say that he has passed the first test of leadership? Leadership is very challenging, it’s not enough for you to have intellect, how you comport yourself matters. Not to even talk of commanding your followers. But I’ve watched him thoroughly, I saw that.
“I’ve already read out his legacy, so, when it comes to legacy, even generations of his children, when they come here, there are things that they will point to: it was under my father’s regime that this was done. So, you have actually left an enduring legacy, sir.”
Reflecting on Tambuwal’s achievements, Ogunlana highlighted financial strides made under his leadership
“Just yesterday or two days ago, I was compelled to highlight his achievements. I’ve listened to you, two things, even though you did not exhaust them, but let me just mention two things that you have left out consistently because I clerked the Committee on Judiciary in the House of Reps. When I was there, I took them from an annual budgetary allocation of less than one billion to about 100 billion.
“Consistently, because the judiciary and the parliament enjoy what they call first-line charge, so most times there’s this coincidence between the two. I don’t know whether it’s deliberate, but whatever they give the judiciary, that’s what they give the National Assembly. So, we were like that up to 130 billion for each.
“But there’s something about this man that people do not know. So I need to bring that up because I was with the Appropriation Chairmen and they mentioned it. They say it’s because of this man that they have to now increase the benchmark to 344”, he added.
Outlining his vision, Ogunlana pledged to foster inclusivity and teamwork within the National Assembly.
“I intend to democratize decision-making. There is no way I will sit down here because I don’t know it all. I have the legal and the legislative background, but I can’t claim to be an expert when it comes to financial issues, and that is where he comes in. I’m very happy that even though he’s leaving, he’s not really leaving”, he stated.

“Digital payments are now common even in small rural shops and among street vendors. More than half of the world’s real-time digital transactions take place in India.

“Together, the people of India and the Government have presented an example of digital revolution to the global community”, she said.

She also pointed to significant investments in roads, railways, waterways and aviation, saying infrastructure development was creating jobs and encouraging private investment.

“Our country has seen an unprecedented expansion of modern infrastructure in the form of highways, waterways, railways and airways. This is creating opportunities for new enterprises, generating employment and boosting investor confidence”, Murmu noted.

Despite economic uncertainties and geopolitical tensions around the world, Murmu said India had maintained its position as the world’s fastest-growing major economy.

“Warfare and instability prevailing in several parts of the world are affecting every country. Even in such trying circumstances, our economy is moving ahead as the fastest-growing major economy in the world.

“We are playing a leading role among the countries of the Global South. Our country has grown in stature on the global stage”, she added.

She noted that women were now excelling in fields traditionally dominated by men, including aviation and modern agriculture.

According to her, women had dominated India’s medal haul at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games.

“It gives me immense pleasure to see our girls performing exceptionally well in the field of education.

“Women’s participation is increasing across diverse sectors, from the Drone Didi who contributes to enhancing agricultural productivity to the Fighter Combat Leader in the Air Force.

“In the recently concluded Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, women have won eight out of India’s total tally of 13 gold medals”, the President said.

Murmu also revealed that a government initiative aimed at creating three crore financially independent women had already achieved its target.

“A target was set to create three crore Lakhpati Didis. This target has been achieved. Now our country is moving towards the goal of creating three crore new Lakhpati Didis.”

She cited the country’s growing start-up ecosystem and recent achievements in space exploration as examples of the creativity and innovation of Indian youths.

“This young population is our most valuable asset. The youth of our country are talented, committed and skilled.

“A new phase of space exploration has been ushered in through the recent successful rocket launch by a young team with an average age of just 28 years”, she said.

On national security, Murmu praised the country’s armed forces and defended India’s tough stance against terrorism.

She also described the elimination of Naxalism as one of the country’s major achievements.

“That historic operation against terrorism demonstrated the capability of the Indian Armed Forces to act with precision.

“It sent a clear and firm message to terrorists and those who support them, that no matter where they hide, they will have to face the consequences of their actions.

“For decades, Naxalism posed a serious challenge to the nation. Making India Naxal-free is a major achievement”, she noted.

The President called on citizens to remain committed to environmental protection, warning that future generations had an equal right to the planet’s natural resources.

“Future generations have as much right over natural resources as we do. We must ensure that none of our actions result in the slightest encroachment upon the exercise of this right by future generations”, she added.

As India marks 80 years of independence, Murmu urged citizens to remain united and continue working towards building a stronger and more prosperous nation.

“When I talk about my country, India, let me say that it is a nation whose GDP is projected to grow between 6.5 and 6.8 per cent this year.

Senator Francis Fadahunsi has come under renewed scrutiny over comments he reportedly made while addressing supporters at his polling unit during Saturday’s Osun State governorship election.

A video purportedly recorded at the polling location showed the senator urging his supporters to monitor their ballots before making further remarks about how they should vote.

The comments have triggered a reaction from the Imole Campaign Council, which accused Fadahunsi of attempting to influence voters during the election.

The council’s spokesman, Pelumi Olajengbesi, described the remarks as unacceptable and undemocratic and called on security agencies to investigate the development.

The latest controversy comes days after Fadahunsi was invited by the Osun State Police Command over comments attributed to him during a campaign event in Ilesa.

The senator had previously faced criticism over a statement interpreted by opponents as a call for violence against members of the Accord Party.

Fadahunsi later clarified that the statement was not intended literally, explaining that he was urging his supporters to defeat the Accord Party politically at the polls.

The earlier controversy also attracted the attention of Amnesty International Nigeria, which called for an investigation and accountability over the alleged inciting remarks.

With voting underway across the state, the latest incident has again placed Fadahunsi under scrutiny amid heightened political tensions surrounding the governorship election.

However, the interpretation of the senator’s latest remarks and the allegations made by the campaign council could not be independently verified as of the time of filing this report.
