Police Call for Suspension of Osun LG Elections, As Adeleke announces poll for tomorrow

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a strong advisory urging the Osun State Government to immediately suspend the upcoming Local Government elections due to credible intelligence indicating high security threats and potential violence.
This is just as the State Governor, Ademola Adeleke has announced the the LG polls across the state are holding.
He also ordered the restriction of vehicular movements in the state during the election.
In a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police warned that various groups, including political elements, are allegedly mobilizing to instigate unrest, disrupt public peace, and undermine democratic stability. Given the volatile security situation, the police emphasized that allowing the elections to proceed could lead to widespread unrest, endangering lives and property. “The Force has assessed the current security landscape and determined that proceeding with the elections under these volatile conditions could escalate into widespread unrest.
The Nigeria Police Force, in collaboration with other security agencies, is fully prepared to take decisive action to prevent any breakdown of law and order. However, to avert unnecessary confrontation and safeguard the democratic process, it is in the best interest of all stakeholders that the elections be stood down,” the statement read. Beyond security concerns, the police also cited legal complexities, referencing the recent clarification by the Attorney-General of the Federation. The Court of Appeal judgment delivered on February 22, 2025, reportedly nullified a previous Federal High Court ruling, raising further questions about the legal foundation of the planned elections. “In light of the combination of heightened security threats and the existing legal complexities, the Nigeria Police Force advises the Osun State Government to reconsider and suspend the planned elections immediately,” the statement concluded. The police urged all stakeholders, including political parties, to exercise restraint and prioritize the safety and stability of the state.
Nigeria’s Falconets have advanced to the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after defeating England 3-0.
The Falconets produced a dominant performance, securing their second victory of the tournament and taking their goals tally to 13 in four matches.
Tosin Rafiu gave Nigeria the lead in the eighth minute before Janet Akekoromowei doubled the advantage two minutes into the second half.
Mary Mamudu completed the scoring in the 73rd minute as the Falconets sealed an emphatic victory over England.
Captain Christiana Uzoma was also instrumental in the win after saving Rachel Maltby’s penalty in the first half to preserve Nigeria’s lead.
Nigeria will return to action in the quarter-finals on September 20, 2026.
Canada has invited 250 senior managers with Canadian work experience to apply for permanent residence through the Express Entry system.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) issued the invitations in its latest targeted Express Entry draw on Wednesday, allowing eligible candidates to move forward with their permanent residence applications.
Candidates needed a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 389 to receive an invitation.
IRCC’s latest selection focused specifically on candidates with Canadian work experience in senior management occupations.
Foreign nationals already in Canada who have applied for permanent residence through Express Entry may be eligible for a Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP).
A BOWP can allow eligible applicants to continue working in Canada while they wait for a decision on their permanent residence application.
According to the information provided by IRCC, applicants whose current work permits expire while their BOWP applications are being processed may benefit from maintained status.
Under maintained status, eligible applicants who remain in Canada can continue working under the conditions of their previous work permit while awaiting a decision.
Eligible family members may also be able to apply for work permits, depending on their individual circumstances and the applicable requirements.
The latest draw provides another pathway for eligible senior managers with Canadian work experience to pursue permanent residence through Canada’s Express Entry system.
The Nigeria Customs Service, Ogun I Area Command, has intercepted contraband with a combined duty-paid value of N2.47bn, including a 2026 Range Rover Sport Autobiography valued at N417.01m, at the nation’s border in Ogun State.
The Acting Customs Area Controller, Ogun I Area Command, Deputy Comptroller Oladapo Afeni, disclosed this on Thursday during a press briefing at the command’s headquarters in Idiroko, where he paraded the seized items.
Afeni said the seizures were recorded between August 14 and September 17, 2026, following intelligence-led operations conducted by officers and men of the command.
Among the items seized were 1,204 bags of foreign parboiled rice, 3,893 parcels of cannabis indica weighing 1.878 tonnes, 428 pneumatic tyres, 8,675 litres of Premium Motor Spirit and 24 bales of second-hand clothing.
The command also intercepted four sacks of used shoes, 500 litres of diesel and the Range Rover Sport Autobiography, which Customs valued at N417.01m.
Afeni said the seizure of the luxury vehicle was part of the command’s enforcement operations aimed at preventing the movement of prohibited goods through the nation’s borders.
The Customs boss said the command would hand over the seized cannabis to the Idiroko Special Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation and appropriate action.
He attributed the successes recorded by the command to intelligence gathering and collaboration with other security and government agencies, including the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Immigration Service, NDLEA and relevant environmental agencies.
Afeni said the command would sustain its enforcement activities along the border corridors, while strengthening inter-agency collaboration to check smuggling and other forms of cross-border crime.
He urged members of the public to support lawful trade and provide useful information to security agencies, stressing that the command would continue to enforce the nation’s laws while facilitating legitimate commerce across the border.
