The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched a probe into former top executives of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) over alleged ab\se of office and misappropriation of $2.896 billion allocated for refinery rehabilitation projects.
Among those under investigation are two former NNPC chief executives, Mele Kyari and Abubakar Yar’Adua, alongside other senior officials, including former managing directors of the Port Harcourt, Kaduna, and Warri refineries.
In a letter dated April 28 and addressed to the NNPC Managing Director, the EFCC requested certified records of salaries and allowances for 14 current and former officials.
The request is part of ongoing inquiries into how funds earmarked for overhauling the Port Harcourt, Kaduna, and Warri refineries-allocated $1.56 billion, $740.6 million, and $656.9 million respectively-were utilized.
Those listed also include former CFO Umar Ajiya, former GED Finance Isiaka Abdulrazak, and several senior refinery staff. Some of them, including the MDs of PHRC, KRPC, and WRPC, were recently removed in a management shake-up.
The investigation comes as Nigeria’s Finance Minister, Wale Edun, confirmed that a forensic audit of NNPC is in progress. Speaking at the World Bank/IMF meetings in Washington, Edun stressed the need for NNPC to boost its dollar revenue amid global economic uncertainty.
The EFCC has confirmed the investigation is ongoing but has yet to release full details.
