A member of the House of Representatives, Rep. Ahmed Jaha, on Tuesday issued a passionate and urgent warning on the worsening security situation in Borno State, declaring that Boko Haram insurgents are returning with greater force and more sophisticated weaponry than the Nigerian military.

His contribution came during a debate on a motion of urgent public importance moved by Rep. Ahmed Satomi on recent deadly incidents in Borno and Yobe States.

Speaking emotionally, Jaha, who represents Damboa/Chibok/Gwoza Federal Constituency, recounted harrowing details of fresh attacks in his constituency, and described a series of violent incidents in which civilians and military personnel lost their lives.

He said: “I represent the extremely displaced and highly victimized constituency of Chibok, Bomboa and Goza.

“Mr. Speaker, Honourable Members of your court. I am talking as a victim of the recent resurgence of an insurgence of Boko Haram. I went to my constituency on Saturday to sympathize, to condone with the people that lost their lives as a result of this sporadic, uninterrupted attack.

“In Pulka ten peasant farmers went out to scavenge for what we call sawroot. Peasant farmers were slaughtered by Boko Haram members and five are still at large and three are critically ill in the hospital.

“In Chibok, 14 peasant farmers were attacked in their community. In less than a blink of an eye, they reduced 14 people to nothing. New motorcycles, new AK-47s kill people when they are running for their own lives”.

The lawmaker went further to highlight attacks on security operatives. “In Izge, I lost two military men, a captain and a senior officer. In Kampu, I lost two men and one military officer. In Wajiboko, I lost so many constituents, because Boko Haram is using armed drones.”

Rep. Jaha warned that the insurgents are now deploying weaponized drones, a technological edge he said the Nigerian Army does not yet possess.

“This will be a record. They are using armed drones, weaponized drones, which the Nigerian army is not using. In other words, they are more sophisticated and advanced than the Nigerian army.

“Boko Haram is first coming back worse than what we had in the past. Take it or leave it. Boko Haram is whatever name you tell them, they are coming back. Let us do something serious in order not to go back to our days when 22 local governments out of 27 local governments were occupied by Boko Haram”, he warned

He likened the situation to historical empires that collapsed due to complacency. “The world used to be the greatest empire of the world, but it was destroyed by the compliance of Syria, of Iran and Syria, because of their inability to get things serious, to deal with their enemies.”

Rep. Jaha said the root problem is not the commitment of troops, but inadequate numbers and equipment. “Personnel there are no Nigeria army personnel. They don’t have enough personnel to face these boys, that is the truth. They are committed, they are very strong in their own stand, but unfortunately they don’t have enough personnel and equipment to face the Boko Haram. I have seen it. Nobody reported it to me because I went to my constituency on Saturday and came back on Sunday.”

He echoed the need for serious legislative oversight, referencing huge past security expenditures. “We shouldn’t be complacent with this. I align with Honourable Deputy by saying that we should do our own mixing. By doing the proper oversight, as many expanded, because between 2015 to 2019, Nigeria government spent N19.7 trillion on security issues. I have the record with me. So we shouldn’t be complacent”, he stated.

Rep. Lawan Shettima, who represents Busari/Gaidam/Yunusari Federal Constituency of Yobe State, decried the persistent insecurity plaguing the North-East, expressing frustration at the seeming ineffectiveness of legislative motions in addressing the crisis.

“Our people are being killed day by day, Mr. Speaker. I want this House to come up with another idea to deal with our people. Mr. Speaker, we have to think how to create a law that will allow our people to protect themselves,” he said.

Shettima emphasized the need for legislation that empowers local communities to defend themselves, citing the inadequacy of current security personnel who “don’t know the terrain” of affected communities.

“Mr. Speaker, let this House think a law that will allow our people to protect themselves from these menace,” he added.

Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, Rep. Babajimi Benson, also lent his voice to the debate.

Rep. Benson who represents Ikorodu Federal Constituency of Lagos State, gave a blunt assessment of the federal government’s handling of national security.

“I stand here with all sense of responsibility and humility to say that the presidency has expended so much money, so much resources on Nigerian military without commensurate results,” he stated.

While commiserating with the victims of recent violence and their representatives in the House, Benson also called for clearer and more effective legislative responses. He addressed Hon. Satomi’s motion, proposing a shift from summoning top military officials to engaging a joint committee.

“I do not think that that amendment is necessary because you have the power to summon everybody,” he argued.

The session underscored mounting frustration among lawmakers over Nigeria’s security challenges and the need for structural reforms, including grassroots defense mechanisms and state policing.

As tensions rise and communities remain vulnerable, the House appears poised to revisit longstanding debates about local security autonomy and the decentralization of force with increasing urgency.

Army arrests suspected kidnapper linked to Kaduna abduction

Troops of Operation ENDURING PEACE, OPEP, in collaboration with the Civilian Joint Task Force, CJTF, have arrested a suspected kidnapper linked to the abduction of a resident in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

This was contained in a statement posted on X by the Nigerian Army.

The post identified the suspect as Buba Ali, 30, adding that he was arrested at about 12:45 pm on Sunday, August 9, at Binawa village in Kauru Local Government Area.

According to post, the suspect was arrested during a joint operation conducted by troops of Sector 7 OPEP and members of the CJTF.

It said the suspect was reportedly linked to the kidnapping of Alhaji Tasi, who was abducted in the village.

“Following his arrest, Ali was taken into custody and is currently being interrogated by security personnel.

“The ongoing investigation is focused on obtaining information that could lead to the identification and arrest of other members of the suspected kidnapping gang,” the Army said.

FFK fumes as Islamic scholar says those against Muslim-Muslim ticket should leave Nigeria

Nigerian ambassador to South Africa, Femi Fani-Kayode, has rejected claims by an Islamic scholar, Sheikh Yahaya Jingir, that Nigeria is a Muslim country.

In a viral video, Sheikh Jingir, who was preaching to Muslims at an event, said “if you don’t want to accept a Muslim-Muslim ticket, you should leave Nigeria because it belongs to us”.

The comment has continued to generate backlash online as Christians rejected the claim.

Reacting, Fani-kayode in a statement posted on his official X handle on Sunday night, said the cleric’s remark is unhelpful and untrue.

“Worse of all is the fact that it is highly provocative,” the former aviation minister said.

“Kindly take note that it is a very slippery and dangerous slope to take and is best avoided. Nigeria is NOT a Muslim country and neither is she a Christian country.

“She is a SECULAR and MULTI-RELIGIOUS state comprising BOTH Christians and Muslims in equal numbers and that is our strength,” FFK added.

He further stated that President Bola Tinubu’s Muslim/Muslim ticket for 2027 is gaining acceptance “only because of the calibre, ability, sincerity of purpose, character, utility and electoral strength of our Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates and their ability to deliver and not because they are Muslims”.

“One day we may have a Christian/Christian ticket too because with God all things are possible,” he added.

Osun Commissioner released on bail after Ilesa APC rally shooting

The Osun State Police Command has confirmed the release of the state Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Moyowa Adejoorin, who was arrested in connection with a shooting incident at an All Progressives Congress, APC, rally in Ilesa.

The incident occurred on Saturday and reportedly left four people injured, including a teenager identified as Tobi Ilesanmi.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, said Adejoorin was taken into custody after police officers arrived at the scene, secured the area and began collecting evidence.

According to Ojelabi, the commissioner’s vehicle was stopped at the location, where an Amotekun operative allegedly linked to the shooting was also found.

“Immediately the incident was reported, our personnel moved to the scene and cordoned off the area before some exhibits were recovered, which included expended cartridges and Amotekun personnel caps.

“Also, Mr Adejoorin was arrested at the scene and taken to the command for questioning as part of the investigation process,” Ojelabi said.

The development came amid heightened attention to the incident after a video circulated on social media on Sunday showing Adejoorin leaving the police command.

Confirming the development, Ojelabi told Vanguard that the commissioner had been released on bail but said he was still awaiting clarification on the status of the Amotekun operative who was arrested alongside him.

“It is true that the commissioner has been released on bail today, but I am yet to clear the situation with the Amotekun personnel arrested with him,” he said.

Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting are ongoing.
