A delegation from the ECOWAS Parliament has met with Guinea’s Transitional National Council (CNT) in Conakry to prepare for a campaign focused on drug abuse and mental health awareness.
The meeting, led by the head of the ECOWAS delegation, allowed both sides to share updates and concerns ahead of upcoming community visits. The goal was to understand Guinea’s current challenges with substance abuse and mental health before public outreach begins.
Present at the session were Members of ECOWAS Parliament, staff, Guinean lawmakers, especially from the Health and Defence Committees—as well as representatives from ECOWAS’ office in Guinea and senior CNT officials.
Guinean MPs, including Professor Hassan, a doctor and head of the Health Committee, raised major concerns about drug smuggling, hidden couriers, and corruption.
They also warned of increasing drug use among young people, mental health issues, and rising crime linked to substance abuse. Other concerns mentioned included online drug sales and the effects on society and the environment.
The Guineans commended the meeting, and described it as timely and important. Both teams confirmed their commitment to the mission, which will continue with field visits and community events starting on 17 June 2025.
