Residents of Sainte-Rose, a quiet commune in northern Guadeloupe, are still reeling after a 60-year-old retired firefighter deliberately robbed a supermarket not for money, but to land himself behind bars with his imprisoned grandson.
The unusual crime, which unfolded near a local police station, has drawn widespread attention across the French overseas territory and beyond for its emotional and almost tragic undertone.
A Crime Planned from the Heart, Not for Profit
According to police reports, the elderly man whose identity has not been disclosed entered the store wearing a balaclava and wielding a replica firearm. He demanded that the cashier hand over the money from the till. However, in a move that baffled witnesses, he also helped himself to a piece of Emmental cheese and a bottle of wine before walking calmly back to his car.
Officers, who were alerted immediately, arrested him just minutes later. He did not resist. In fact, as investigators later discovered, that was precisely his plan to be caught and sent to jail.
“He Only Wanted to Be with His Grandson,” Says Lawyer
The suspect’s lawyer, Léa Le Chevillier, told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that her client’s actions were born out of love and desperation rather than greed.
“He wasn’t interested in money,” she said. “He simply wanted to be in prison with his grandson, to comfort him and ensure he was safe.”
During a recent visit to the prison, the grandfather reportedly found his grandson in a fragile emotional state with a broken tooth and visible signs of distress, allegedly from being bullied by other inmates. Feeling powerless to help from the outside, he resolved to get himself locked up so he could offer protection from within.
A Judge’s Unprecedented Ruling
When arraigned before the local court, the man immediately confessed to the robbery. Prosecutors initially charged him with armed robbery, aggravated assault, and resisting arrest, offences that typically carry sentences of three to five years in prison.
However, the presiding judge described the case as “extraordinary and emotionally complex.” Taking into account the man’s spotless record, age, and psychological condition, the court decided that incarceration would serve no purpose.
Instead of sending him to jail, the judge ordered him to:
Compensate the supermarket for damages,
Undergo mandatory psychological therapy, and
Stay away from the shopping centre.
In a compassionate twist, the court also authorized the man to continue visiting his grandson legally, ensuring he can maintain their bond without resorting to crime again.
Community Reacts: A Story of Love, Desperation, and Misjudgment
The story has stirred deep emotions across Guadeloupe. Many residents expressed sympathy for the grandfather’s intentions, even as they condemned his unlawful act. Social media users have called the incident both “tragic” and “touching,” describing it as a reminder of the extreme lengths people can go for family.
Legal experts say the case raises important questions about mental health, loneliness, and intergenerational relationships, especially among elderly citizens dealing with emotional distress.
For now, the retired firefighter is back home under supervision, receiving counseling while continuing to visit his grandson this time, through the proper channels of the law.
