Senate condemns killing of 56 in Niger

The Senate on Tuesday condemned in strong terms the killing of at least 56 persons and the abduction of women and children in Konkoso Village, Niger State, describing the attack as brutal and unacceptable.
The attack occurred on February 14 when terrorists invaded communities in Borgu Local Government Area, killing residents, abducting several others, and razing houses, including a police station.
The upper chamber called for the immediate deployment of additional security personnel to the affected local government areas to strengthen rapid response and forestall further attacks.
It also mandated its Committees on Defence, Army, Air Force, Police Affairs, and National Security to conduct a joint assessment of the security situation and report back within four weeks.
The Senate observed a minute of silence in honour of the victims and extended condolences to the bereaved families, as well as the government and people of Niger State.
The resolutions followed a motion of urgent national importance moved by Senator Mohammed Sani Musa (Niger East).
Moving the motion, Musa informed the Senate that more than 56 citizens were killed in Konkoso and nearby Pissa villages, while several women and children were abducted.
He said the affected communities share boundaries with strategic forests linking neighbouring states, which have become corridors exploited by terrorists for cross-border movements and coordinated criminal operations.
“The North Central region has witnessed rising attacks on rural communities and farmlands, threatening food security, local economies, and broader national stability,” he said.
Musa commended President Bola Tinubu and security agencies for sustained counter-terrorism efforts and the sacrifices of troops confronting violent extremism.
However, he expressed concern that repeated assaults on remote communities expose gaps in intelligence gathering, coordination, rapid response, and sustained territorial security presence.
“The abduction of women and children has deepened the humanitarian crisis, inflicting lasting psychological trauma on families and destabilising affected communities,” he added.
Musa warned that without structural reforms and modernisation of Nigeria’s security framework, similar tragedies could persist despite ongoing military and intelligence operations.
Seconding the motion, Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Mohammed Monguno (Borno North), called for increased budgetary allocation to security agencies to address the security challenge.
“In the course of the ongoing budget defence, we discovered that there were zero capital budget releases to security agencies,” he said.
“So, in line with the President’s declaration of a state of emergency on security, prominence should be given to security agencies,” Monguno added.
The Oyo State Police Command has nabbed 10 suspected members of a human parts trafficking syndicate and recovered suspected human remains, including a heart and pieces of a skull, during an intelligence-led operation in the state.
The suspects were arrested at their various hideouts in Iseyin and Saki areas of Oyo State following months of intelligence gathering, discreet surveillance and monitoring by operatives of the Command’s Monitoring Unit.
The suspects were identified as Adam Ibrahim, 42; Nasiru Kabiru, 22; Tijani Wasiu, 54; Abiola Nasiru, 45; Amusa Gbadamosi, 57; Raheem Taofeek, 46; Jimoh Muritala, 35; Suleiman Busari, 47; Ganiyu Nurudeen, 36; and Usman Abdullahi, 52.
According to the police, searches conducted at the suspects’ hideouts led to the recovery of several suspected human parts, including one suspected human heart, human flesh, pieces of human skull and assorted charms.
The Command said the recovered items had been secured as exhibits and would undergo forensic examination as investigations continue.
The suspects reportedly confessed during interrogation to varying degrees of involvement in the alleged trade in human parts for ritual purposes. The police said they were also assisting investigators in tracing the source of the recovered items, as well as establishing how they were procured and their intended use.
The Command added that efforts were ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the alleged syndicate.
The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, commended the operatives for the successful intelligence-led operation and their painstaking efforts in tracking down the suspects.poli
He assured residents that the Command would continue to intensify its efforts to combat criminal activities and protect lives and property across the state.
Ahead of today’s guber poll, the Police has deployed some of its security dogs to Osun state to ensure seurity is not breeched during and after the election.
The police dogs have been prepared to assist security personnel in detecting and confronting potential threats from violent criminals.
The Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Hon. Adewale Egbedun, has reportedly been placed under house arrest, with unidentified security operatives in police uniforms surrounding his residence in Osun State.
According to reports, the security personnel arrived at the Speaker’s residence in more than 10 black Hilux vehicles and allegedly cordoned off the premises.
The Imole Campaign Council said it attempted to contact senior police officers and the Police Situation Room to obtain clarification on the development but was unable to reach them.
It also urged security agencies and political actors to ensure that the electoral process remains peaceful and free from intimidation, fear or interference.
The council called on residents and all stakeholders to remain calm, obey the law and await an official explanation from the relevant authorities.
As of the time of filing this report, there had been no official explanation from the police or other security agencies regarding the reported operation at the Speaker’s residence.
