The aircraft, identified as Flight AI133 and operated by a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, was redirected to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely at around 2pm GMT on Monday.

All passengers and crew on board were confirmed unharmed following the unscheduled diversion, the airline said.

According to flight tracking service Flightradar24, the aircraft had already been airborne for more than six hours before the decision was made to change course.

Air India stated that the diversion was carried out as a safety precaution, adding that the aircraft was undergoing technical checks “in accordance with established safety protocols”.

Air India Flight AI133, operating from Bengaluru to London Heathrow on 23 March, made a precautionary en route diversion to Jeddah following a suspected technical issue,” the airline declared in a statement.

While the airline did not reveal the number of passengers and crew on board, it stressed that their safety and wellbeing remained its “highest priority.

The incident marks the second involving the airline within days. On 19 March, a Vancouver-bound flight returned to Delhi after about seven hours when it was discovered that the Boeing 777-200LR had not been cleared for the route.

That aircraft, registered VT-AEI, had already entered Chinese airspace before turning back, with all passengers and crew disembarking safely upon arrival in Delhi, according to the airline.

Monday’s diversion comes amid wider disruptions in Gulf airspace linked to the US-Israeli war on Iran, while a separate aviation incident on Sunday saw an Air Canada Express flight collide with a ground vehicle at LaGuardia airport in New York, resulting in fatalities and multiple injuries.
