Tension is mounting within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State as delegates who attended the party’s recent national convention have raised concerns over the nonpayment of their stipends, warning that the situation could trigger an internal crisis if not urgently addressed.
One of the aggrieved delegates, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of victimisation, accused the state chapter of silence and inaction over the matter.
“The APC delegates who went to the national convention are yet to receive their stipend. And the state chapter is keeping mute. They have not done anything about it,” the source said.
“The delegates are not happy with the way things are going, because they have yet to receive their stipend, and most of them are asking questions indirectly in order not to get themselves into trouble.”
The delegate further alleged that while their counterparts from other states have received their entitlements, those from Enugu remain unpaid, deepening frustration among party members.
“The delegates are not happy with the way things are going, because they have yet to receive their stipend, and most of them are asking questions indirectly in order not to get themselves into trouble,” he said.
According to him, delegates from other states have been paid, but delegates from Enugu State have not been paid.
When asked about the exact amount expected, the source declined to disclose a specific figure but hinted at disparities across states.
“I won’t say, but for delegates from Ebonyi State, we are hearing that they were paid about $800. But I know it varies from state to state,” he said.
“But in Enugu, due to bureaucracy, it is trying to spoil what is being done in the party, which we are still trying to see if it can stabilise in the South-East, let alone in Enugu.”
The situation, he warned, is already fuelling dissatisfaction within party ranks, with delegates increasingly demanding accountability from party leaders.
“People are complaining and are asking about the whereabouts of their stipend, because people spent their money, risked their lives to attend the convention and endorsed candidates, at the end of the day, almost two weeks after the convention, they are yet to receive their stipend,” the aggrieved delegate said.
“The state chapter knows the truth. Even the state chairman is asking what is happening. If it is the state that is holding the money, they should release it because internally, things will really go wrong,” he added.
The development comes amid ongoing efforts by the APC to consolidate its foothold in Nigeria’s South-East region, a zone where the party has historically struggled for dominance.
This suggests that unresolved grievances such as this could undermine internal cohesion and weaken the party’s political positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.
