FEC approves N759bn for construction of major roads

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has given the green light for the allocation of N759 billion towards the construction of vital road networks, including the Obajana-Benin and Isheri-Ogun routes.

During a press briefing at the State House in Abuja following the FEC meeting, Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, outlined the projects earmarked for funding. These include the Obajana-Benin Road, Isheri-Ogun Road, and the Outer Marina Shoreline protection.

Umahi clarified that the rise in cement prices is unrelated to the concrete road policy implemented by the ministry. He highlighted the augmentation approved for various road projects, notably the Obajana-Benin dualisation, Isheri-Ogun Road, and Outer Marina Shoreline protection.

Explaining the augmentation for the Obajana-Benin dualisation project, Umahi stated, “We got approval for augmentation from N122 billion to N897 billion. The contractors were off-site due to non-payment based on the new basic rate. With the approval, they have resumed work.”

Additionally, FEC sanctioned N2.23 billion for the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency to facilitate repairs and maintenance on the Isheri North-Ogun State road infrastructure. Umahi emphasized that this route serves as an alternative to the Lagos-Shagamu Road, which will be tolled upon completion, as per legal requirements.
