Just in: Senator Ningi’s suspension may soon be reviewed

Published

on

The three-month suspension placed on Senator Abdul Ningi over allegations of N3.7 trillion padding of the 2024 budget may be reviewed, according to sources.

Recall the Senate under the leadership of Senate President Godswill Akpabio had suspended the Bauchi lawmaker amid the head of the controversy.

A member of the Appropriation Committee in the Senate, Jimoh Ibrahim, first moved the motion for Ningi’s suspension for 12 months over allegations of criminal misinformation and breach of peace in the National Assembly and the country by extension.

But sources close to the leadership of the Senate said last night that the allegation of budget padding was a plot to tarnish the image of the National Assembly and distract attention.

One of the sources said the issue, which culminated in Ningi’s suspension “is being resolved amicably.”

He said the suspended senator might be reinstated anytime “if he tenders a public apology to the Senate.”

“I can tell you there is no tension in the Senate. The Senate remains one. The allegation about budget padding is just a ploy to tarnish the image of the senate under Godswill Akpabio who has shown uncommon commitment towards tackling the various challenges confronting the country by fostering effective collaboration with the Executive without jeopardizing the principle of separation of power.

“The N3.7 trillion that was mentioned represents the budget of government owned enterprises (GOEs) and they are expected to come to the Senate to defend their budget because the details are not always in the entire estimate. So, where is the budget padding allegation coming from? The budget was prepared by the executive. The House of Representatives plays more role in scrutinizing the budget and so where’s this allegation coming from if not because some people felt they should be the President of the Senate and not Senator Akpabio.

“There was also the allocation for Zonal Intervention Projects (ZIPs) for members of the National Assembly for their constituencies. The money is not being released to any lawmaker but this is in form of projects for their constituencies”, the lawmaker who did not wish to be name said.

There have been pressure on the senate to revisit its action deemed unfair in some quarters.

Hoodlums Storm Kogi Monarch’s Palace, Set Vehicle Ablaze

Published

on

Hoodlums reportedly attacked the palace of the Etsu Nupe Lokoja, HRH Emmanuel Akamisoko Dauda-Shelika, over the weekend, destroying properties and setting a vehicle on fire.

The incident occurred around 1:00 AM on Saturday, leaving the monarch and his community in shock and disbelief.

HRH Emmanuel Akamisoko Dauda-Shelika, also known as Nyamkpa IV, recounted the traumatic experience, expressing his astonishment at the brazen attack. Despite efforts from his neighbors to help, the flames rapidly consumed his car and other possessions within the palace grounds. The monarch described the terrifying moment when he heard a loud bang on his door, prompting him to check through the window. To his horror, he saw a raging fire engulfing his car, signaling the start of the attack on his residence.

Realizing the danger, HRH Dauda-Shelika feared for his life and chose not to confront the attackers directly. Instead, he made a quick escape through the back door and scaled the fence to flee to safety. In his reflection on the event, he emphasized the importance of peace, urging the Nupe community in Lokoja to avoid any retaliatory actions. He called on the government and security agencies to thoroughly investigate the attack and hold those responsible, as well as their sponsors, accountable.

“I urge my people to remain as peaceful and law-abiding as we have always been, because this incident has drawn the attention of the government to our issue,” the monarch stated, encouraging calm and cooperation with the authorities during the ongoing investigation.

The timing of the attack is significant, as it occurred just before the Nupe Natives of Lokoja Development Union was set to host the second edition of the “Lokoja ’24 Nupe Cultural Fiesta,” a major cultural event aimed at celebrating Nupe heritage and community unity. The festival, which would have attracted many to the region, has now been overshadowed by the violent incident.

As of now, the Kogi Police Command has not provided an official statement. Attempts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Williams Aya, for comment on the matter were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to calls or text messages. The incident has raised concerns about security in the area, and local residents are hoping that law enforcement will take swift action to identify the culprits and prevent further unrest.
