Body Odour: 5 reasons your sweat smells so bad

Are you aware that sweat has no scent or odour?

Sweat does not produce body odour; instead, bacteria that break down sweat proteins do. An unpleasant odour may arise from an overabundance of “bad bacteria” on the skin.

Body odour can be caused by several different things, though. Elements such as:

Stress
Apocrine and eccrine sweat glands are the two types found in your body. Sweating that stinks results from your body activating the apocrine glands when you are stressed or agitated. Did you know that stress can cause unpleasant effects on the body, such as pimples, poor sleep, and even changes in your smell? To reduce stress, try engaging in peaceful and pleasant activities.

Alcohol and Spicy Foods
The scent of the body might change with spicy foods, alcohol, and steak. In an investigation written in Chemical Senses, one group consumed red meat while the other did not. Two weeks later, people found the non-meat group’s odour more appealing and pleasant than the red meat group’s.

Quitting antiperspirant abruptly
Long-term antiperspirant users typically have higher bacteria in their armpits several days after stopping use than long-term deodorant users. When deodorant users quit using it, they smell better than those who use antiperspirant. Studies indicate that discontinuing the usage of antiperspirants after years of regular use could exacerbate body odour. In contrast to deodorant, stopping the usage of antiperspirant increased the amount of “smelly bacteria” in the human armpit microbiome, according to a 2016 study published in Peer.

Signs and symptoms of a medical issue.
A sudden change in body odour, such as hyperhidrosis, may result from certain medical conditions. A major underlying medical issue may also be indicated by body odour. People with diabetes may detect a bad odour. Additionally, bad breath may be a sign of renal and liver problems.

Clothing
Wearing soiled or improperly laundered and sun-dried clothing can occasionally produce an offensive body odour. Moreover, too tight or unbreathable fabrics can retain sweat and intensify odour. Dress in cotton, linen, and merino wool to enhance your natural scent.

Remember to take regular baths. See a doctor if you address the abovementioned issues and the odour persists.
