The federal government, alongside the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), is taking steps to prohibit syringe imports in a bid to enhance local manufacturing.
This decision was communicated through NAFDAC X’s official platform on Sunday, March 24, 2024.
Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister of State for Health, underscored the imperative of discontinuing the importation of medical syringes into Nigeria to stimulate the domestic economy.
This move garnered additional support from Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General of NAFDAC, during her visit to the Afrimedical Manufacturing and Supplies Limited Syringe factory in Ogun State.
The purpose of the visit was to address the influx of substandard medical device imports and advocate for domestic manufacturing.
Dr. Alausa reaffirmed the government’s dedication to fostering local industries, stressing the significance of reviving syringe production within Nigeria to ensure the availability of superior-quality products and generate employment opportunities.
Prof. Adeyeye affirmed NAFDAC’s stance on halting import authorizations for syringes, shifting focus towards domestic manufacturers, and collaborating with them to improve production standards.
