12 months after death of Shehu Malami, widow, children fight dirty over nulti-billion Naira properties
Barely one year after the death of the Nigerian Ambassador to South Africa, Alhaji Shehu Malami, the family is currently at loggerheads over his multi-billion naira properties.
So bad is the situation that Shehu Malami’s widow, Hajia Asma’u Malami has dragged her stepson and stepdaughter to Court over her husband’s will.
Those who aligned with the widow are other plaintiffs, Mustapha, Sadiq, Amina, Zainab and A’isha, children of the late Malami and Asma’u.
The respondents are also deceased children Aminu and Hafsat.
At the resumed hearing on Tuesday, the presiding Judge, Alkali Nasiru Jibdawa, admitted in exhibits the two Wills left behind by the late Malami which were tendered through a witness, Alhaji Abdulkadir Bello.
The plaintiffs’ Counsel, Mr Nasiru Shehu-Na’ige, prayed the court for explanation from the witness on the whereabouts of some properties located in Maitama, Abuja, plots also in Abuja, farm along with house located at Mambila in Taraba state.
The witness Bello, who told the court that he is one of the property administrators appointed by a Court in Abuja, said the plots belonging to the deceased Malami located in Asokoro and Guzape in Abuja were sold by the deceased while a farm and house in Mambila were also sold after his death.
The witness who is also a relative to the deceased told the court that the house in Maitama Abuja and Alkammawa in Sokoto metropolis were covered by the Will left behind by the deceased.
Bello further provided the breakdown of late Malami’s properties located in Kaduna, Kano and Sokoto states along with shares domiciled in different companies with the present market values and bank accounts.
He added that process was on progress to recover and take ownership of a house located in Cairo, Egypt which also belong to the late Ambassador.
Respondents’ Counsel, Mr Almustapha Abubakar, reserved questions till the Plaintiff Counsel completed his submissions.
Abubakar argued that two Wills left behind by the late Malami were properly headed, contains desirable explanations and duly signed as well as attested by lawful authority.
He added that members of property administrators assigned by the court were the deceased wife, and biological children whom were part of the suit.
After listening to different parties, the Judge, Alkali Jibdawa, adjourned the case to April 26, 2024, for continued hearing and ordered serving a court surmons to Mambila properties manager, Mr Goodluck Amuba, who supervised the sale to appear.
Late Malami was a Knight of British Empire, a respected and prominent Industrialist who served Nigeria in different capacities, holder of Officer of the Order of Federal Republic (OFR) as well as former traditional ruler, Sarkin Sudan, district head of Wurno in Sokoto state.
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) will on May 28, arraign Mr Karl Toriola, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (MD/CEO) of MTN Nigeria Communications Plc.
Toriola, MTN Nigeria Communications Plc and others will be arraigned over alleged failure to produce documents and information required by the commission in compliance with a lawful summons contrary to the FCCPC Act.
The company and its CEO will be arraigned alongside Tobechukwu Okigbo, MTN’s Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer and Ikenna Ikeme, General Manager, Regulatory Affairs of MTN, before Justice H.J. Yilwa of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that FCCPC had, in the charge marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/354/2024, named MTN Nigeria Communications Plc, Toriola, Okigbo and Ikeme as 1st to 4th suspects respectively.
The suspects were preferred with two counts in the charge, dated July 19, 2024, and filed July 22, 2024 by a team of lawyers led by Akoji Achimugu.
When the matter was called, they were not in court.
Justice Yilwa asked the FCCP lawyer, Chizenum Nsitem, the whereabouts of the suspects.
Nsitem informed the court that though the matter was scheduled for the arraignment of the suspects, he was just briefed about the case and would need more time to study the case file.
The judge adjourned the matter until May 28 for arraignment.
NAN reports that the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) had earlier filed charge against MTN Nigeria Communications Ltd; its CEO, Toriola; MTN Senior Executive Officer, Nkeakam Abhulimen; Fun Mobile Ltd, a telecommunications service provider; and Yahaya Maibe, its CEO.
The NCC, in the three-count charge marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/111/2024 presently before Justice Inyang Ekwo of a sister court, filed it on March 20, 2024.
The prosecution alleged that the defendants, between 2010 and 2017, “offered for sale, sold and traded for business, infringed musical works of Maleke Moye, an artiste, without his consent and authorisation.”
The commission alleged that the defendants used Maleke’s musical works and sound recordings with subsisting copyright, known as “caller ring back tunes” without the authorisation of the artiste.
The musical works and sound recordings of the musician allegedly infringed upon include “911, Minimini-Wana Wana, Stop Racism, Ewole, 911 instrumental, Radio, Low Waist, and No Bother.”
They were also alleged to have illegally distributed the musical works to their subscribers, without authorisation, thereby infringing on the rights of the artiste.
In the third count, the suspects were alleged to have had in their possession, the musical works and sound recordings of the artiste, other than for their personal or domestic use.

The copyright commission said the alleged offence is punishable under Section 20 (2) (a) (b) and (c) of the Copyright Act, Cap. C28, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
Justice Ekwo had, on Feb. 25, adjourned the matter until May 15 for report, following the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF)’s interest to take over the case.

The Speaker House of Representatives, Rep. Tajudeen Abbas, has affirmed that the 10th Assembly will play a pivotal role in advancing gender inclusion and balance in Nigeria’s political and governance structures.
The Speaker who stated this on Monday in Abuja when he received a delegation of British parliamentarians eemphasised that the 10th House has prioritised gender parity and is actively working on constitutional amendments to entrench this goal.
Highlighting the House multiparty composition, he assured the visiting MPs that beyond political diversity, the 10th Assembly is strongly committed to promoting the rights and participation of women and youth in governance.
David Shikfu Parradang, ex- Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), has been killed by kidnappers in Abuja.
Citing security expert, Zagazila Makama said after being trailed from a bank where he had withdrawn money, the assailants took the cash from him before eventually killing him.
“The tragic incident has raised fresh concerns over security in the Federal Capital Territory, particularly regarding the increasing cases of kidnappings and targeted attacks,” Makama said in a post.
Parradang, who served in the NIS for over 30 years, held various positions across the country, including Comptroller General.
He served in Kano, Lagos, Kwara, Enugu, and the Federal Capital Territory. He also attended several professional courses both within Nigeria and internationally.
In recognition of his service, he was awarded the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) and was a distinguished graduate of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS).
Security agencies have reportedly launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his abduction and killing, with efforts ongoing to apprehend the perpetrators.
The Nigerian Immigration Service is yet to confirm the tragic development but an official at Immigration headquarters in Abuja said it is true.
“The report is true but we need to wait for Immigration authorities to make official publication,” he said.
