A group of governorship aspirants participating in today’s primary election of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, have initiated a protest due to the non-distribution of election materials.
Agents representing the aspirants arrived at the Bon Hotel, the designated venue for the distribution of election materials, and waited for more than three hours. However, they were informed that voting had already commenced in certain areas of Akoko and Ondo South senatorial district, where APC members had gathered.
Senator Omo-Agege, the Secretary of the Primary Election Committee, had earlier assured stakeholders that the distribution of materials and result sheets would begin at 7 am. The protesting aspirants, who arrived at the Bon Hotel as early as 6:30 am, did not witness any distribution of materials
Dr. Olugbenga Edema, one of the aspirants, called for a postponement of the primary if the processes were not conducted in a credible manner.
He stated, “During the stakeholders’ meeting, Omo-Agege informed us that the distribution of materials would commence at 10 am. We have been here since 6:30 am, alongside the listed electoral officers, but nothing has been distributed. We need a credible election where every vote counts. If they are not ready, then they should postpone the election.”
