Naira Notes: Nine Common Actions That Can Lead To Legal Palaver

The Central Bank of Nigeria’s Clean Notes Policy aims to maintain the quality of circulated banknotes.

Bobrisky’s imprisonment for abusing the naira highlights the seriousness of such actions.

Below are nine actions involving the naira that could lead to legal consequences:

Spraying: It’s illegal to spray banknotes at events.

Writing: Writing on banknotes is prohibited by law.

Stapling: Stapling banknotes is prohibited due to potential corrosion.

Tearing: Tearing banknotes is also illegal.

Dancing or stamping on naira: This is prohibited, as it can deface the notes.

Selling: Selling currency banknotes is illegal.

Mutilation: Tampering with naira notes violates the CBN Act Section 21.

Rejecting the naira: Refusing to accept the naira is strictly prohibited (Section 20, Subsection 5).

Money bouquets: Those was identified as a form of naira abuse by the CBN in February 2023.

However, this sentencing serves as a warning, following similar incidents, such as actress Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin’s conviction for defacing naira notes.
