FAAN reopens Lagos Airport runway after plane skid-off incident

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Sunday assured of the safety of runway 18L at the domestic wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos following its closure on Saturday when an NG Eagle aircraft operated by Xejet skidded the runway and landed on the grassland.

The incident, according to the National Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) caused the Runway 18L to be shut to other aircraft by the FAAN.

The B5 aircraft with registration number 5NBZZ skidded off the runway into the grass having landed the runway from Abuja at 11:29 am with 52 passengers and 3 crew members.

The NSIB Saturday said, “Fire and Rescue on ground to help in evacuation of the passengers. At the moment, Runway18L is closed to traffic.”

The director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection of FAAN, Mrs Obiageli Orah, in a terse statement Sunday said: “Runway 18L has been reopened after an NG Eagle XEjet with the registration number 5N-BZZ, en route from Abuja to Lagos, landed and skidded off the runway.
