Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has shut down all the country’s seaports in line with the directive of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC).
The action has grounded commercial activities inside and outside the seaports.
NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) had threatened to embark on strike over the proposed national minimum wage.
The executive members of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), had stormed Apapa and Tin-Can Island Ports around 8am to chase out clearing agents from the ports.
They said the move was in compliance with the directive of NLC after the meeting with the federal government ended in deadlock.
Jonhkenedy Ikechukwu, Public Relations Officer of MWUN, told on correspondent that the strike action is total.
He said there is no going back until government accepts the demands of the organized labour.
“All the seaports is currently under lock and key. The strike is total and there is no going back, until government accepts the demands of Labour” he said.
Our correspondent observed that only officers of the Nigeria Customs Service were seen at their offices while banks and food vendors also stayed away.
