Kano Court Adjourns Govt Case Against Ado Bayero, Others To July 2

Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu has adjourned the hearing on the Kano State government’s motion, which seeks to restrain Aminu Ado Bayero and four others from presenting themselves as Emirs, to July 2, 2024.

According to Naijablitznews.com, a recent ruling by a Federal High Court in Kano invalidated all actions taken by the state government to repeal the Kano Emirates Council Law 2024.

This law, initially repealed by the Kano House of Assembly, prompted Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to remove Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero as the Emir of Kano and reverse the establishment of four additional emirates—Bichi, Rano, Karaye, and Gaya—created by his predecessor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

The reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano followed, overturning his earlier dethronement by Ganduje in 2020.

However, Aminu Babba Danagundi, a kingmaker in the former Kano emirate known as Sarkin Dawaki Babba, challenged the legality of the law. Represented by his counsel, Chikaosolu Ojukwu (SAN), Danagundi petitioned the court to declare the law null and void.

In a ruling delivered last Thursday, Justice Abdullahi Muhammad Liman overturned the Kano government’s actions and instructed all parties to maintain the status quo ante.
