Cubana Chief Priest To Pay N10m To FG, Campaign Against Naira Abuse

By Kayode Sanni-Arewa

The Federal High Court in Lagos has mandated that celebrity bartender and businessman Pascal Okechukwu, widely known as Cubana Chief Priest, forfeit ₦10 million to the Federal Government.

This ruling comes after accusations of his involvement in the misuse of the Naira. The court’s decision stems from a settlement agreement between Okechukwu and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). This agreement was formally accepted by Justice Kehinde Ogundare on Tuesday.

EFCC counsel Bilkisu Buhari-Bala informed the court that both parties had agreed to an out-of-court settlement, which had been duly signed by Cubana Chief Priest. Okechukwu’s lawyer, Senior Advocate of Nigeria Chikaosolu Ojukwu, expressed appreciation for the EFCC’s pragmatic resolution of the case. Ojukwu noted that Okechukwu is regretful and has vowed to change his ways. As part of the settlement, the court will dismiss the charges against Okechukwu. Justice Ogundare confirmed the settlement terms and subsequently struck out the charges.

Key points of the settlement, as per Section 14 (2) of the EFCC Establishment Act, 2004, include: The agreement is limited to the current charges against Okechukwu. Okechukwu must enter a bond with the EFCC, promising to maintain good behavior and avoid any economic and financial crimes. He is required to launch a rigorous campaign against the misuse of Naira notes and coins, in line with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act. Okechukwu must post at least two videos every two months on his social media accounts, promoting the campaign against Naira abuse and related offenses. He must pay ₦10 million to the consolidated revenue fund of the Federation. This ruling not only serves as a penalty for Okechukwu but also aims to increase public awareness about the importance of respecting the nation’s currency.
