Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has expressed gratitude for the recent support extended by approximately 50 legislators, led by Hon. Obi Aguocha, urging the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPoB).
The Deputy Speaker commended the bipartisan effort across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones, highlighting the importance of Kanu’s release for regional peace.
He noted the significance of ongoing discussions and private engagements aimed at achieving a political resolution regarding Kanu’s case, underscoring the need to handle such sensitive matters discreetly.
Kalu further disclosed his personal interactions with Kanu and conveyed optimism regarding a positive outcome.
Acknowledging the lawmakers’ initiative, Kalu, who represents Bende Federal Constituency of Abia State, appealed for calm among the Igbo community and cautioned against exploiting Kanu’s situation for personal gain or political leverage.
He emphasized the administration’s commitment to the Southeast’s development, citing the pending South East Development Commission (SEDC) bill awaiting presidential assent.
In closing, Kalu thanked his colleagues and supporters nationwide for their solidarity, reaffirming confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s dedication to resolving Kanu’s case through diplomatic channels.
